Mariners: You’re the one for us, Faty

Jacques Faty is the first casualty of Sydney FC’s off-season cleanout, with the defender to leave the club immediately for Central Coast.

Faty had been contracted until the end of the 2015-16 season with an option of a further year but both club and player have agreed to a termination.

He has signed a one-year deal with this season’s wooden-spooners the Mariners, as Tony Walmsley’s side embarks on a mission to inject experience into his youthful line-up.

A star of last season’s A-League grand-final run, Faty has struggled to recapture his form this campaign and was even dropped in December after giving away two last-gasp penalties.

The 32-year-old was also overlooked for coach Graham Arnold’s Asian Champions League squad along with fellow import, marquee Filip Holosko.

The club revealed the decision yesterday, hours after Faty’s non-inclusion in the squad for the Sky Blues’ 4-0 regular-season finale win over Perth.

“Jacques has given great service to the club and played an integral part in our record-breaking season last year,” Arnold said.

“We thank him for the time he has given to Sydney FC and wish him all the best for the future.”

It’s the first in what will likely be numerous exits as Sydney look to rebuild following a disappointing A-League campaign, in which they finished seventh and out of finals contention.

If Arnold’s recent selections are anything to go by, Faty’s cousin Mickael Tavares could be next on the chopping block and is understood to also be on the Mariners’ radar.

The midfielder, who joined Sydney with Faty last January, has another year left on his contract but was not even on the bench for the past two matches.

At Allianz Stadium on Sunday, Arnold said he’d decide over the coming weeks what changes would be necessary to rebound from the “unacceptable” campaign.

But he was tight-lipped about which – and how many – players might depart.

“There’s players obviously off-contract and on-contract,” Arnold said.

“Every team rebuilds – even the team that wins the league will rebuild.

“Whether it’s small or big, we need to decide over the next few weeks.”
