The 28-year-old polled 118 votes to edge out Sydney recruit Jordan Dawson by just four votes.

Midfielder Ben Keays finished third with 88 votes.

Laird had previous won the award in 2018 and last year.

“It’s pretty surreal to be honest, I don’t think it’s really sunk in to be mentioned in the same sort of category as some of the legends of not only the Adelaide Football Club but also legends of the game,” he said.

“It’s a massive honour.”

Laird topped the competition this season for average possessions with nearly 33 per game.

He also averaged 8.1 tackles per game – only team-mate Sam Berry averaged more in the AFL.
