The Suns issued a statement this morning confirming that Rankine, 22, has expressed his desire to move back to South Australia to continue his career.

The out-of-contract forward has had his head turned by a lucrative five-year offer from the Adelaide Crows, reportedly as high as $850,000 a season.

Rankine, who originally played for West Adelaide, was drafted by the Suns with the third pick in the 2018 national draft.

He has since kicked 52 goals in 46 games, including 29 goals in a breakout 2022 season.

Rankine was also above his career average for disposals, marks inside 50 and goal assists this season.

“We have created a football club where our players and staff are committed to success, so we’re disappointed with his decision,” Gold Coast Suns general manager player talent and strategy Craig Cameron said.

“We’ve provided an environment and support network around Izak since he was drafted to help him play his best football and it’s disappointing that journey won’t continue.”

Rankine’s formal request to move home sets up a looming trade tussle between Adelaide and Gold Coast, with the Crows’ pick five in the upcoming draft looming as crucial.

Getting the deal over the line would give Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks a potent forward line next season, with Rankine slotting in with fellow top draft picks Josh Rachele, Darcy Fogarty, Riley Thilthorpe and veteran Taylor Walker.

The AFL Trade Period opens on October 3 and runs until October 12.
