Eagles celebrate flag anniversary by demoralising premiership coach

Essendon coach John Worsfold arrived at his former stomping ground hoping to pull off a miraculous win against the club he captained and coached to three flags.

West Coast’s 2006 premiership side walked a lap of honour before the game as part of the 10-year flag reunion.

Ben Cousins was a notable absentee after being taken to hospital earlier in the week following an incident on a Perth highway.

But Daniel Chick accepted the invite despite airing explosive claims last year alleging widespread use of cocaine, ecstasy and methamphetamine during his time at the Eagles.

Worsfold’s tactics were spot on early as the Bombers clicked into gear with clean, attacking footy through the corridor.

The Bombers made the most of their early chances, and had 4.1 to their name by quarter time.

But they could only manage 1.8 over the next two quarters as West Coast took control of the match.

Bombers forward Joe Daniher produced some memorable moments – including a smart snap from the pocket in the second quarter.

But West Coast had far too much firepower at the other end, booting nine goals in the final quarter to blow out the final margin.

“The last quarter was so disappointing,” Worsfold said.

“History says with these boys they don’t give up, but they had no answer… they couldn’t get their hands on the ball and West Coast were playing like they were a fresh, hard-running side.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson conceded his side took a while to work their way into the contest.

“We were off in the first quarter,” Simpson said.

“It was the clearances mainly for us – it was 4-14 at one stage.

“I thought the intensity was leaning towards Essendon’s way. The second half I was pretty pleased with.”

Worsfold says he was left disappointed by the undisciplined acts that are set to result in suspensions to experienced duo Mark Jamar and David Zaharakis.

Jamar was reported in the 78-point loss after striking Jeremy McGovern with a forearm to the face as the pair squared up off the ball.

McGovern wasn’t badly hurt by the hit, but the high nature of the contact and the fact it happened while the ball wasn’t in play is set to cost Jamar.

Zaharakis is also set to be scrutinised by the AFL’s match review panel after punching Jackson Nelson in the guts.

Nelson was heavily winded by the hit, and vomited as he was taken from the field.

Worsfold has implored his players to play a hard but fair brand of football this season.

He said the incidents involving Jamar and Zaharakis didn’t fit into what values the team represented.

“I asked the players (Jamar and Zaharakis) if they felt better after those incidents, and giving a free kick away against their teammates,” Worsfold said.

“And you can imagine the response I got. We got beaten in that area of discipline and mental toughness, and that’s disappointing.

“It’s a big learning curve and (it involves) more senior players, so that’s disappointing.”

Jamar is set to spend several weeks on the sidelines anyway after injuring his hamstring in the third quarter.

And Essendon’s ruck stocks are set to be further tested after Matthew Leuenberger struggled on with a knee injury against the Eagles.

Worsfold says Leuenberger is unlikely to be fit to face St Kilda next week, leaving top-up player Sam Michael and Shaun McKernan as the likely players to fill the double ruck void.

Essendon put up a good early fight, taking a three-point lead into quarter time, and trailing by just 19 points midway through the third term. But from there West Coast romped away to a 20.10 (130) to 7.10 (52) victory, a fitting tribute to their premiership heroes.

Well, all but one.
