Sanderson wants hungry players

Jun 13, 2013

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says there’ll be no repeat of last weekend’s capitulation to Sydney, vowing to bring in “hungry players” for Saturday’s must-win AFL game against Richmond.

The Crows suffered an embarrassing 77-point defeat to the Swans at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.

“We have lost the respect of the competition with a performance like that,” Sanderson told reporters on Wednesday.

“It’s a performance we never want to see again.”

The coach said small forward Jared Petrenko won’t be at the MCG to face the Tigers, after spraining his right AC joint in an on-field collision against the Swans.

But small defender Luke Brown and midfielder David Mackay should return.

Sanderson said midfield star Patrick Dangerfield had played at half-back at training on Wednesday, adding “this is a little teaser” on Saturday’s line-up.

Sanderson said changes definitely had to be made which would result in a much better performance than last weekend.

“When you have a 77-point loss at home, you have to make changes, you can’t say `we forgive you, let’s get on with it’,” he said.

“There has to be some adjustments to the side.

“We have to bring in hungry players.”

Describing the Richmond game as “must-win”, the coach said an extensive review of the Swans game meant “you won’t see a performance like you saw last week”.

“We have got too many guys dipping in form at the same time,” he said.

He said Richmond boasted great talent and would be a tough opponent but the Crows were ready.

Sanderson said he was already anxious about the game, but confident of a win if Adelaide picked the right side, prepared well and used the right strategy.

“It’s just a game we can’t lose,” he said.
