Australia Day ODI at the Oval, but doubts linger over day-night test

The third Test of Australia’s summer cricket schedule has been confirmed to begin on November 24 in Adelaide, but it remains to be seen if it will be a repeat of last year’s day-night match played with a pink ball or a traditional red-ball test.

But the Australia Day ODI will return to Adelaide Oval in 2017, with Australia hosting Pakistan in the 50-over fixture.

Cricket Australia today revealed the 2016-17 summer schedule, with Australia hosting South Africa in a test series, the third instalment of which will be in Adelaide.

But the Proteas have been apprehensive about the day-night format, after vocal critiques from some members of the Australian side about the pink ball used against New Zealand last summer.

SACA Chief Executive Keith Bradshaw said he was hopeful of a positive outcome for members and fans.

“We have a fantastic Test match against South Africa in late November, one of the leading Test playing nations in the world, and we’re going to see a great spectacle,” Bradshaw said in a statement.

“I can understand the trepidation [from players] given that they haven’t played pink ball cricket under lights [but] what we’re really trying to show is that this is about putting the fans first and we saw that last year with 123,000 people across three days here at Adelaide Oval.

“It is the way the game is heading at the moment and we are going to see more day-night Test cricket.”

Cricket fans voted with their feet for the day-night format last summer, making the Australia-NZ clash the highest Test match attendance in the oval’s history, outside Ashes fixtures.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said concern from the South African players was “understandable”.

“But day-night Test cricket is all about the fans and a day-night match in Adelaide will be a bigger Test match crowd than the South African players will have ever experienced,” he said.

Bradshaw added he was “really hopeful that with the discussions between the two respective Boards we will see a day-night Test match and putting fans first”.

“Let’s hope we get a good outcome on that front,” Bradshaw said.

“It is really important that we maintain the integrity of the game and while it was a three day Test match last year, I thought we saw a great contest between bat and ball and a great game of cricket… it wasn’t just about a pink ball or it wasn’t just about playing at night or through that twilight period, it was also a fantastic pitch that was prepared by Damian Hough and his team.

“We have the most fantastic oval here to host the match and the conditions at that time of the year are perfect for day-night cricket against a great backdrop… it created a lot of interest not only here in Australia but around the world and I’m sure we would see that again.”

Bradshaw said it was “exciting” to secure the Australia Day ODI “and I’m sure that SACA Members and the public will be thrilled with that result”.
