Lehmann Australia’s new coach

Jun 24, 2013

Mickey Arthur has been sacked as Australian cricket coach just two weeks before the Ashes.

Queensland coach, South Australian Darren Lehmann, will replace Arthur, who was axed with a year and a half to run on his contract.

Lehmann’s appointment will be announced by Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland at a media conference later Monday in England.

Arthur was sacked in Bristol on Sunday night (local time), by Sutherland and CA high performance manager Pat Howard.

Lehmann, currently in England coaching Australia A, takes charge just weeks before Australia’s Ashes campaign starts.

The former Australian batsman will be presented as the new coach when Sutherland and Howard hold a media conference in Bristol on Monday.

South-African-born Arthur became the first foreign-born coach of the Australian team when appointed in November 2011.

But his tenure has been marred by recent controversies and poor on-field results, including a 4-0 Test series loss in India and failure to make the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals.

Arthur had been contracted until the end of the 2015 World Cup.

Lehmann has proved popular as a batting coach of Australia A and in his trophy-winning stint in Queensland.

The 43-year-old, renowned as a shrewd thinker during his playing career of 27 Tests and 117 one-day internationals, has won the Sheffield Shield and one-day titles with the Bulls while also steering Brisbane Heat to the Big Bash League title.

Lehmann has also coached in the Indian Premier League with Kings XI Punjab and the defunct Deccan Chargers.

In Queensland, he has moulded a young side into trophy winners.

“He has been awesome … I get along with him very well,” Australian Test fringe batsman Usman Khawaja said recently.

“I love the way he goes about his business. He’s tough but he’s always having fun.

“One of the best things about him is he’s got a really good cricket brain, and you just can’t buy that.

“He’s had so much experience, he’s played 300-400 first-class games, and the way he talks about cricket, he simplifies things.”
