Australia’s Jason Day believes he can lift his game still further as he seeks to follow Sunday’s breakthrough World Cup win by claiming the Australian Open at Royal Sydney.

Day showed great composure over Sunday’s closing holes to clinch a two-shot win over Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and claim the individual trophy at Royal Melbourne.

He and Adam Scott, who came third, also combined to win the World Cup for Australia.

Both will be playing in Sydney starting on Thursday.

Scott is seeking to clinch Australia’s triple crown, after winning the Australian PGA and Masters in recent weeks.

Day is looking to build on his strong form in what will be his first appearance at Royal Sydney.

“Preparation is huge for me next week,” Day said on Sunday night.

“I am probably most likely going to take tomorrow off after such a big week this week.

“I just need time to just relax and think about what has happened over the last week.

“I will get out there Tuesday and really try and put a good solid 18 holes in, get a good practice session in and then play the pro-am and, hopefully by then, I am familiar with the golf course.

“I feel like everything is in a good spot right now.

“I just need to keep working hard and hopefully put on a good show.”

US Masters champion Scott, who finished strongly with the equal-best final round, a five-under-par 66 at Royal Melbourne on Sunday, said his hectic schedule hadn’t robbed him of energy or motivation to win the Open.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said.

“Obviously Jason is playing great. There is a host of guys who are going to be wanting to win badly.

“It’s going to be a great week.”
