The Forager podcast: Central Market institution takes on the world

In the latest The Forager podcast, we talk to a third-generation member of an Adelaide Central Market institution – and learn how he’s taking his grandmother’s recipe for tomato sauce to the world.

Simon Bugeja’s grandmother Lucia introduced generations of South Australians to authentic, home-style Italian food, via her much-loved eponymous cafe that has been operating in the Central Market since 1957.

Lucia’s tomato sauces, once made by family in giant backyard bottling sessions, also introduced many South Australians to the summery joys of proper homemade Italian pasta sauce.

Simon talks to us about how the family is taking that tradition to the world – without really changing a thing.

“It’s about respecting the way it’s always been done,” he says.

Check in to The Forager each week in July for new episodes of the podcast, produced for Solstice Media by The Message Pod. Last week we shared the fascinating story of writer and gardener Lolo Houbein.
