Commenting on the story: New Aquatic Centre clears council hurdle despite filibuster attempts
Thomas Kelsall’s article makes it seem as if I am the only person advocating that the State Government’s proposed new $135 million megalith aquatic and commercial centre ought to be built on a brownfield site rather than park lands. The story omits the results of the council’s own consultation on this topic (98 per cent of respondents shared this view) and also ignores the almost 8000 signatures that the Adelaide Park Lands Association has collected on a petition urging the Premier to “choose a brownfield site” for a win-win.
It is both surprising and disappointing that both the council and the State Government are determined to proceed with the deeply unpopular win-lose option, rather than the win-win that the community so clearly has been demanding.
Thousands of South Australians would applaud a State Government and a council that could deliver both a new aquatic centre as well as a fully restored three hectares of open, green, public Adelaide Park Lands. – Shane Sody, president, Adelaide Park Lands Association
