Commenting on the story: Hindley Street upgrade to prioritise pedestrians, outdoor dining

And will Hindley Street between King William Street and Morphett Street match that between Morphett Street and West Terrace?

Car parking was removed, the road was reduced to one lane each way, the footpath was widened for dining and pedestrians but no bike lanes were included, despite having a bike box at the Morphett Street lights.

So do cyclists share the road with cars, or the footpath with pedestrians and diners? Whose idiotic, and dangerous, idea was this? – Angelo Mazzei

All very well for the ACC to spend money on Hindley Street, but what about the drug and drink-fuelled morons who frequent this area? I can just imagine dining kerbside and being confronted. Do the councillors ever walk the streets after dark?

So the ACC also reduces parking along the strip, great for those who have difficulty walking and could do with a park close by or cynically a move to increase parking infringement revenue. The ACC wants folk to spend their money in town, but then remove parking places. Wake up ACC. – Jim Baker

The best thing that Council could do for Hindley Street would be to heritage list and restore the historic buildings in Hindley Street ahead of another public realm upgrade.

Historically Hindley Street had more impressive buildings that Rundle Street because it was closer to the Port, which you can see if you look up.

Most of the historic buildings in Hindley Street remain unlisted and unprotected. A beautiful pair of restored buildings was demolished to make way for the tilt up concrete Heaven night club, which could have been done incorporating rather than replacing these buildings.

If the buildings were heritage listed and generous funding and assistance offered to owners concurrently restore them to their former glory it could and would be a great outcome for the street, capitalising on its historic beauty. – Sandy Wilkinson

Excellent observation and description of what we all experience with joy yet never able to express so clearly! – Andre Potgieter
