Commenting on the story: Central Market Arcade traders’ eviction plea
I have been a Central Market shopper for many years, but less so since Covid and the loss of some favourite stalls.
Ordinary people have always been the lifeblood of the market and the reason for its marvellous diversity. I fear the architects of change want to target the tourist market, force out small stall holders and replace them with glitzy tourist attractions.
If this happens Adelaide will lose forever what was once the best city market in all of Australia. Has the City Council listened to the voices of the ordinary people? I fear not. – David Shepherd
The Central Market redevelopment is not and never will be, an opportunity to improve the feel of a historical market environment with local traders.
It’s a developer’s dream, granted by a handful of government decision makers deaf to the community. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck – it’s a duck. – Julie Glynn
After reading this article I can hear Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi playing in my head (paved paradise and put up a parking lot).
I lived for 30 years in Sydney and my major bragging right of Adelaide was the Central Market. It is the motivation of while travelling in Morocco I always found time to visit their souks and markets; the charm of individual artisans showing what not losing touch with our food is about.
I am not about no change per se but a light touch preserving the integrity (wholesomeness) of this unique Adelaide jewel should be foremost in a plan. – Roxanne Morrow
Commenting on the story: SA records six COVID deaths as school students set to begin term one
I found this headline hard to fathom. Six people between 70 and 100+ have sadly died. I suspect that they were not intending to start term one this week. Effectively there were two independent stories to report upon; let’s keep everything relevant.
For too many months the media, in conjunction with politicians of all persuasions, have in my opinion failed to understand the Covid situation and accurately report the relevant risks for the relevant segments of our community. Until this happens Covid will continue to cost hard working Australians billions of dollars and we get no closer to life returning to normal. – Don Will
Commenting on the opinion piece: Time for close examination of pandemic emergency powers
One would argue that the ‘Major Emergency’ phase has well and truly passed. Automatically extending it 20 times and counting is just lazy and based on the idiotic ‘out of an abundance of caution’ motto. It’s not based on science and real world evidence.
Remove all restrictions now and let’s get back to democracy before we forget. We have heroic levels of vaccination. Vaccinated and unvaccinated can pass on the virus so mandates are utterly pointless and illogical. Better to spend some of this money on improving services and not on endless testing of asymptomatic healthy people who then have to isolate, disrupting services including our food supply. How much more are we willing to sacrifice on the alter of the unholy Covid? – Tom Boss
