Cheers to World Gin Day from all corners of the city

It’s World Gin Day this Saturday and the CBD is not one to be quiet about it. Here’s some of the city’s top spots to sip the juniper spirit.

Whether your gin order is more along the lines of a dirty martini or perhaps a gin fizz, the CBD is bursting at the seams with places mixing, shaking and pouring your favourite gin.

Starting in the east end, Mr GoodBar is focusing on doing gin plain and simple. Hidden above the Union Street archway overlooking Ebenezer Place, the soulful cocktail, gin, and whiskey bar will be offering $10 G&Ts showcasing local brand 36 Short.

“They make Blood Orange, Hibiscus and Rhubarb Gin which is really tasty,” Bartender Savannah Derose said.

“We always try to showcase local and specialty gins along with new and unique brands so people can come in and get the chance to try them.

“We are lucky that in South Australia there is an abundance of great botanicals and creative individuals working year-round to create unique varieties and flavours.”

Get cosy in a booth or mingle on the dancefloor lined with neon signs, before hopping to and from the ever-growing collection of bars that dot Rundle Street and its laneways.

Down the road to Pulteney Street, Bar Peripheral offers an intimate experience with just 12 seats throughout.

While it won’t be pouring anything specific for World Gin Day, the bar brings a unique way of ginning; face on with the bartender, moody lighting, and nowhere to hide.

Taste your way through the many gin-based drinks and learn the story behind each.

“There are countless gin cocktails on offer,” said owner and sole bartender Vini Wang.

“But classically a Martini and a Gimlet are the most popular choices.”

While nearby Hutt Street draws in passers-by through its many hospitality venues, Bar Peripheral attracts a more local residential crowd allowing regulars to visit with ease.

If you’re able to score one of the 12 seats this World Gin Day, look forward to a tailored cocktail and a long wholesome chat with Vini.

Heading to the heart of the city’s nightlife in the west end, Hindley Street is possibly the last place one might expect to settle into a light easy read with a gin in hand.

Bibliotheca Bar however offers just that, located on Gresham Street off the bustling party strip.

“We’re not just a bar; we’re a book exchange,” bartender Vlad Sopotsko said.

“We have a lot of specialty cocktails that are based on classical books such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Lolita, among others.”

On World Gin Day, the boutique bar will be offering one of their most popular and unique drinks — Memoirs of a Geisha.

Presented in a Japanese style teacup inspired by green tea, the cocktail is based on gin sake and melon liquor, and is served with floating lychees and a side of mochi.

“It’s definitely one of the showstoppers,” Vlad said.

With its change in pace on Friday and Saturday nights, a stop off at Bibliotheca Bar is a chapter not to skip on World Gin Day.

To the south of the city on Gilbert Street, Prohibition Liquor Co is a local gin distillery pouring its very own spirits in their tasting room.

Neighboured by The Gilbert Street Hotel and 5 O’Clock Somewhere, Marketing and Events Manager Kate Carpenter said the city’s south is a hot spot to grab a drink.

“We love this end of town,” Kate said.

“We moved into Gilbert Street almost five years ago and we’ve watched the landscape of the area really change. It’s casual and cool.”

To celebrate World Gin Day, Prohibition Liquor Co will be hosting a series of masterclasses guiding attendees through the secrets if gin cocktail making and pairing.

Kate recommends enjoying a flight on the day, or trying the distillery’s newest gin called Moonlight which changes colour from dark purple to bright pink.

“It’s truly magnificent and equally delicious,” Kate said.

“When anyone orders this, the whole tasting room becomes a sea of pink.”

Queen’s Head Hotel.

To North Adelaide, it’s World Gin Day all year-round at Queen’s Head Hotel where it pours top shelf gins for $12 from Monday to Sunday.

“Gin is served with your choice of fresh or dehydrated fruit which we dehydrate ourselves,” Venue Manager Navekka Worthington said.

The family friendly pub is a short stroll from the Adelaide Oval and makes a convenient spot to grab a drink and a pizza, whether it’s footy day or not.

Navekka says one of the hotel’s most popular and unique gins is the Red Hen Ultra Violet Dry Gin, which has similar qualities to Prohibition’s lustrous Moonlight spirit.

“Customers are so fascinated with how the Ultra Violet gin looks,” Navekka said.

“It’s a blue-purple colour and turns into this nice light pink colour then when tonic is added.”

Whether your juniper drink is glowing shades of pink or is a classic clear, cheers to World Gin Day from all corners of the city this Saturday. Discover more hot spots to grab a drink and uncover more about the city on the ADLocal website.
