Carnegie Mellon University in Australia offers a comprehensive public policy, management and technology curriculum to give post-graduate students the additional skills to navigate the increasingly uncertain business environment.

Professor Timothy O’Loughlin, who teaches public policy at the university after a career in the South Australian public service, said the masters degrees will help  students make sense of the data-overloaded world through the unique program of course work, case studies and real world projects.

Prof O’Loughlin said the university offered mid-career professionals the benefit of career advancement while studying in their hometown with the added incentive of generous financial support.

CMU-A is offering scholarships worth 60 per cent of tuition for Adelaide-based full- and part-time students for the January, May and August 2020 intake.

There’s also an additional early-bird discount of $5,000 for students who enrol by 15th December 2019 for the January 2020 intake.

The scholarships are for students undertaking Master of Science degrees in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) and Information Technology Management (MSIT)

“There are two types of Public Policy schools – those who teach what public policy is, and those who teach what Public Policy should be,” Professor O’Loughlin said.

“The CMU-A curriculum focuses on teaching ‘what PP should be’ and is focused on deep development of technical analytic skills that are in short in most policy-making environments.”

All CMU degrees are accredited and recognised in both the United States and Australia.

The MSPPM program combines a comprehensive public policy and management curriculum and is tailored for individuals seeking to boost their career in policy development, implementation and evaluation, and to manage these functions in government, non-profit organisations and the private sector.

Course work includes policy analysis, macro- and micro-economics, statistical methods, cost-benefit analysis, IT applications, and strategic planning and leadership development.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Information Technology programs are consistently ranked among the world’s elite with the Information and Technology Management and Analytics Education currently ranked the top in the world.

The MSIT degree is designed for practitioners wishing to update their skills to deal with the changing intruder landscape and to gain a deeper understanding of data analytics, business intelligence, risk management, information security, database management, blockchain and internet of things.

The university’s global footprint offers students the opportunity to achieve a world-class American degree adapted to the Australian market at a school with small class sizes and international faculty.

Prof O’Loughlin said students in Adelaide had the opportunity to study in Pittsburgh and the benefit of global expert teachers.

“There is a mixture of local faculty, local adjunct faculty, visiting professors and some classes videoed in from Pittsburgh,” he said.

Jonathan Teubner, a Public Policy graduate who works for the Australian Rail Track Corporation as a Economic Regulatory Development manager, said Carnegie Mellon helped him transition from sales to policy roles.

“The CMU Australia degree was the perfect fit for me when I wanted to transition from a purely commercial role to one where I could develop and influence policy direction,” Teubner said.

“I’d recommend the MSPPM degree to anyone wanting to understand public policy, influence the policy making process, drive policy debate or manage the impacts of policy changes.

“My studies at CMU-A opened up a world of new career opportunities. Consequently, I now work in a senior role where I’m responsible for understanding, managing and influencing the public policy debate in the multi-billion dollar rail and road transportation sector.”
