Yorke Peninsula crash starts new year road toll

South Australia has recorded its first road fatality for 2024 with the death of a man at Moonta.

Police said emergency services were called to Duncan Street, East Moonta just after 3pm on Wednesday after a car left the road and crashed into a fence.

The driver, a 55-year-old man East Moonta man, died at the scene.

Major crash investigators were at the scene on Wednesday afternoon to assist the investigation.

It marks the first road death in South Australia in 2024.

Last year, the state recorded its highest road toll since 2010, with 117 fatalities.

The 2023 road toll was also up more than 60 per cent from 2022, when 71 deaths were recorded.
