Police said they are were called to Parliament House just before 6pm Tuesday after after reports that a man had driven a black Audi sedan into an external roller door leading to a secure car park.

Police said the man then approached Parliament House staff trying to gain access to the building, but did not enter.

Police Security Officers spoke to the man and detained him until police patrols arrived.

The 42-year-old was arrested and charged with property damage.

Lower House Speaker Dan Cregan late this morning issued a statement saying that after driving through the closed roller door, the driver approached staff who refused entry.

“After inspecting the vehicle, South Australia Police determined that it posed no immediate risk,” Cregan said.

“Shortly after 11pm the man was observed re-entering the carpark and Protective Services Officers responded. The man was later arrested.

“Police advise that they do not consider the incident an intentional attack on Parliament House.”

The man was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in January.
