Whetstone said in a statement released late on Friday afternoon that he had accumulated too many demerit points.

“I have had some recent traffic offences which mean it is now inappropriate for me to continue as shadow minister for road safety,” he said.

“Road safety is critical and it’s important the opposition has a strong voice in this portfolio.

“I apologise to those that I have let down including the South Australian public as well as my colleagues.”

Whetstone said he came to his decision after meeting Opposition leader David Speirs.

Speirs will take on the road safety portfolio until a permanent replacement is named.

Whetstone will remain the opposition’s spokesman for corrections, mental health and suicide prevention and community safety.
