The Gawler Place building bore the brunt of strong gusts, following a Bureau of Meterology damaging wind alert for the Adelaide metropolitan area and Mt Lofty Ranges.

An Adelaide City Council worker said the facade, which was over four storeys tall, fell to the ground at around 10pm.

The worker said it was lucky no one was around and that the collapse had not occurred on a busy Friday or Saturday night.

Just before midday on Wednesday there were still 59 power outages affecting more than 3700 people across the state, according to SA Power Networks.

Most blackouts are around greater Adelaide and attributed to “extreme weather conditions”.

More than 12,000 customers lost power yesterday with SA Power Networks crews working into the night, while the State Emergency Service has responded to nearly 400 calls for assistance since Tuesday afternoon.
