The City of West Torrens is hosting a community meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the terms of the council’s proposed 42-year lease with the Adelaide Football Club for the Thebarton Oval precinct.

The Crows announced in August they had settled on the Torrensville site as the home for a new $75m to $80m “world class” HQ, featuring two ovals, a standalone AFLW facility, an “interactive museum”, café and a new council community hub.

One of the ovals will be located on Kings Reserve, adjacent to Thebarton Oval, which is currently an open community space.

Crows chair John Olsen said at the time of the announcement there “won’t be any restriction” to public access to the area, except for when the Crows are training.

But local residents group spokesperson Paul Boylon said awarding the Crows a lease of the Thebarton Oval precinct would have “massive lifelong impacts”.

“We are disappointed that the Council appears to be handing over much more than Thebarton Oval and, at the moment, is proposing very little in return for the local community,” he said.

The residents group said it is asking for the council to “undertake more meaningful consultation” on the proposal to give residents “more time, information and transparency” about the decision.

The City of West Torrens has opened a four-week public consultation period on the Crows’ proposed lease which is due to end on October 14.

Among the benefits of the lease touted by the council include new revenue from the Crows paying rent for the precinct, new facilities being built for community use and “ongoing maintenance of assets and green space within the Precinct”.

It also says the proposed lease includes conditions regarding “increasing community access to the Precinct, supporting everyday use and organised activity”.

A regular meeting of West Torrens Council is due to be held tonight.
