Frozen raspberries have been added to the Patties Foods recall list.

Frozen raspberries are the latest product to be recalled by Patties Foods as the food contamination scare involving its berry products continues.

The Victorian company has added Nanna’s Raspberries 1kg packs to its consumer recall list, following fears of possible hepatitis A contamination.

SA Health is urging South Australians to see their doctor should symptoms of Hepatitus A develop.

Symptoms include yellow eyes or skin, abdominal pain, nausea, fever and chills.

Nine adults have so far contracted the virus after eating frozen mixed berries, including three in Victoria, two in New South Wales and four in Queensland.

The Queensland Health department said it was unclear whether one of those diagnosed consumed the suspect berries.

SA Health Chief Medical Officer Professor Paddy Phillips said while the risk of contamination appears to be fairly low in South Australia, people should remain vigilant if they have consumed any of the recalled berries products (full list below).

“There are a lot of people out there who have eaten the frozen berry products and are now wondering what they should do next,” Phillips said.

“Hepatitis A cannot be tested for until symptoms develop, which can take between 15 to 50 days.

“At this stage we’re just asking people to be aware of what the symptoms are and to see their doctor if they develop, particularly if they have eaten frozen berries in the last two months.”

He said an investigation by all health agencies was underway, but it remained unclear how many people may be affected.

Patties Foods managing director Steven Chaur said the latest recall was a precautionary measure in the interests of public safety.

“Investigations through our supply chain have identified a specific source of raspberries as a potential common link to the possible safety issues raised by health authorities,” he said.

The supplier of the raspberries was no longer used by Patties Foods, he said.

The other products on the nationwide recall list are Nanna’s Frozen Mixed Berries 1kg packs and Patties’ 300g and 500g packs of Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries.

Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver, which is spread when people eat or drink food or water that is contaminated by faecal matter containing the virus.
