Rear Admiral the Honourable Kevin Scarce (Rtd) will deliver Flinders University's 2014 Investigator Lecture.

The former Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral the Honourable Kevin Scarce AC CSC RAN (Rtd), will deliver Flinders University’s annual Investigator Lecture on November 24.

Titled Divided we fall: Finding a shared vision for South Australia’s economic transformation, this year’s Lecture will focus on what South Australia needs to do – and avoid doing – to meet the challenges of an uncertain economic future.

Born and raised in Adelaide, Kevin Scarce rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and head of Maritime Systems at the Defence Materiel Organisation, before serving as Governor from August 2007-August 2014.

He has also been head of the South Australian Government’s Defence Unit, led a team that was responsible for the Air Warfare Destroyer being built in South Australia, and served as commander of the Navy’s premier training establishment, HMAS Cerberus.

One of Rear Admiral Scarce’s great passions is to ensure South Australia successfully transitions its economy for the future.

In his final year as Governor of South Australia, he initiated the Shaping the Future of South Australia program at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) Trustees meeting in November 2013.

At that meeting he called upon CEDA members to help address the current challenges facing South Australia. The resulting project – in which Flinders University was very involved – produced a report in August 2014 which contained a series of practical actions to transform the State’s economy for the 21st Century.

At this year’s Investigator Lecture, Flinders Alumnus Matt Johnson, who is another South Australian with a long track record of service to South Australia, will be honoured with a Distinguished Alumni Award. This recognises his professional achievements and significant service to the university and state of South Australia.

Mr Johnson has recently returned to Adelaide from a posting as Deputy Agent-General in London, and is currently Executive Director, Investment, Trade and Strategic Projects at the Department of State Development.
