Labor promises new city high school

Nov 26, 2013

Labor is promising to open a second city high school in 2019, under a new education policy announced by Premier Jay Weatherill today.

Weatherill said the new school would allow the Government to make zoning changes to ensure more students in the inner-city suburbs can attend a public school in the city.

From 2015, the suburbs of Ovingham, Prospect, Fitzroy and Thorngate would be brought into the zone for Adelaide High. When the new school opened in 2019, students in a range of other inner suburban areas would be brought into the city zone.

In other moves, the Government says it will consult with Norwood Morialta High School about a proposal to move the school to a “world-leading education precinct” at the University of South Australia’s Magill campus.

The policy also calls for more specialist public schools, including “specialist partnerships between primary and secondary schools”.

New education requirements will be introduced for teachers, with  all new SA teachers required to have a Master’s degree from 2020, with further qualifications required for preschool directors and school principals.
