“Bon bon” in French translates to candy, and the host of Cirque Bon Bon promises you’ll find all manner of deliciousness in this show.

Enter the Space Theatre and give yourself up to Mario Queen of the Circus – a leather-clad Queen fanatic sporting a moustache to make Freddie Mercury proud. Lights dim and the troupe of Cirque Bon Bon dancers take to the stage, staying throughout to guide the way from one circus act to the next.

At first, the theatre seems too small to contain the energy and grandiose nature of the high-flying acts to come, but the intimacy of the Space means every muscle strain and falling bead of sweat is on show.

Mario’s own talents are in the spotlight, taking juggling from a clever little sideshow act to a main event. He also provides the comedic relief between the breathtaking stunts. Sink low in your seat if you’re shy, because there’s a bit of audience participation – far from being cringe-inducing, however, these are moments that encourage screams of laughter.

In a city that’s filled with sexy people performing aerial tricks every Mad March, it’s becoming more difficult to impress, but Cirque Bon Bon tests everything you thought you knew about strength, flexibility and gravity. You’ll be caught somewhere between worrying for the performers’ safety and marvelling at their abilities.

The Gold Coast’s Duo Synergy – Emma Goh and Scott Lazaverich – take trust to new limits, while wearing roller skates. The pair provide some serious “How is that possible?” moments, balancing their two bodies in unimaginable ways.

The set of Cirque Bon Bon is simple, with just the coming and going of performance props, including a cyr wheel, an ascending coat stand, a bow and arrow, and a bathtub, all used in imaginative ways.

Lighting takes the mood where it needs to go and the soundtrack for the night features a sprinkling of Queen, of course, and pared-back covers that transform pop favourites into sultry numbers fit for scantily-clad contorting.

With everyone safely back on the ground, Mario has made good on his promise; you’ll leave with your sweet tooth satisfied.
