Emerging composers chosen for ‘ReClassified’ festival
Recitals Australia has created a music festival for November, featuring six emerging South Australian composers.
The ReClassified festival will be held over three Sundays, with concerts in three different venues on November 6, 13 and 20.
The concept has an interesting twist. Six composers – Connor Fogarty, Esmond Choi, Aaron Pelle, Lauren McCormick, Georgina Bowden and Hannah Wilkinson – will work with experienced mentor composers to produce works for trios of professional musicians.
The mentors include Anne Cawrse, David John Lang, Rachel Bruerville and Martin Cheney. The November festival performances will be held in The North Adelaide Baptist Church and Hall, Stangate House, Aldgate, and Z-Ward, Glenside.
Cawrse says the six composers were chosen not only because of the quality of their work, but their appetite for collaboration and learning.
“To be a composer you need to be insatiably curious and prepared for a lifetime of learning,” she said. “I feel the team of composers and performers we’ve assembled for ReClassified will all learn from one another, and together create a very special and important musical experience.”

Chamber music near you
Chamber Music Adelaide has released the schedule of concerts it is producing in collaboration with local councils.
The pilot “Chamber Connect” program is designed to support employment opportunities for professional chamber musicians through a residency program with the Cities of Onkaparinga, Marion and Port Adelaide Enfield.
The project’s goals are also to support the return of audiences to live events, while also providing a digital concert experience for those who are either not able, or hesitant, to attend live events.
The detailed schedule (see below) spans a range of local musicians in diverse settings.

Poetry slammers back in action
South Australia’s top slam poets will be competing to represent the state at the national finals, with the event returning to the Sydney Opera House for the first time since 2019.
Locals can see the state final at Goodwood Theatre next Friday (September 30), where 10 poets will compete for a chance at national glory.
Hosted by Spoken Word SA, the local component of the Australian Poetry Slam is big on audience participation.
Judging is undertaken by five randomly selected audience members, with the crowd encouraged to “cheer, holler, and stomp”.
Friday’s finals with feature a guest spot by cabaret star Frankly.
