Flickerfest

This international short film festival returns to the Mercury Cinema on Saturday with a “best of” curated selection of 16 shorts chosen from around 2700 entries. The Best Of International Shorts begins at 6pm and includes films from Hungary, Finland, the UK, Portugal and France. The Best of Australian Shorts, from 8.30pm, includes Gracie Otto’s Desert Dash (pictured above), where a character is trapped in a video game with opals as currency, and Ghostbear, which follows a polar bear cub wandering through the Arctic wasteland. Bohemian Rhapsody singalong

Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park is holding a special singalong screening of Bohemian Rhapsody next Thursday (February 7), offering wannabe Freddie Mercurys the opportunity to belt out hits such “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “We Will Rock You” and “Somebody to Love”. Other upcoming films include Aquaman (tonight), Ralph Breaks the Internet (Saturday), epic climbing film Free Solo (Sunday – read InDaily’s review here), and Can You Ever Forgive Me (Tuesday). Gates open at 7pm, with films starting at sundown. Moonlight Cinema runs until February 17.

ASO Season Opening Gala

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is reaching for the stars with its first concert of 2019, which will see conductor Benjamin Northey lead musicians in a performance of Holst’s The Planets. The Season Opening Gala, at the Festival Theatre on Saturday, will also feature pianist Simon Tedeschi performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto and will culminate with Sibelius’s hymn to his homeland, Finlandia. 

Thebartonia

This summer street party in Thebarton, hosted by the Wheatsheaf Hotel and City of West Torrens, will feature live music across three stages, with a line-up including the Shaolin Afronauts, The Yearlings (pictured above), Golonka, Cal Williams & Chris Finnen, Adam Page & Tim Bennett, Doctor Desoto and Ben Searcy. There will also be food trucks, roving performances and market stalls. The Thebartonia fun begins at 3pm on Saturday and continues until midnight.

So Pop – ‘the ultimate throwback experience’

This may be too much of a throwback for some, but those who like to party like it’s the ’90s can happily turn back time and jump on the Vengabus. Touring Australia and New Zealand and stopping at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for one night only on Sunday, So Pop is a four-hour show featuring a line-up including – yes, you guessed it –Vengaboys, Aqua,  B*Witched, Eiffel 65, Lou Bega and more.

First Fridays – Grabbing the Bull by the Horns

Tonight’s after-hours event at the Art Gallery of SA will include live music by Les Sirènes, who will perform a mix of French and Flamenco-inspired tunes in celebration of the First Friday theme, Grabbing the bull by the horns: experiencing Picasso’s Vollard Suite. There will be guided tours of gallery collection highlights and Picasso: The Vollard Suite – an exhibition of some of the artist’s most celebrated etchings, which ends on Sunday. A discussion forum at 6pm will reflect on Picasso’s practice in the context of the #metoo movement. Details here.
