WOMADelaide – Botanic Park

Adelaide’s festival of world music, art and dance returns from tonight with a line-up including American jazz fusion musician and producer Thundercat, gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, Chicago-based eight-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, “Queen of the sitar” Anoushka Shankar, Mali desert blues group Tinariwen, US saxophonist Kamasi Washington, producer Mista Savona’s Havana Meets Kingston project, and Australian acts The Avalanches, Dan Sultan, Yirrmal and Baker Boy. Adelaide Festival

The Adelaide Festival continues into its second week with highlights including Shakespearean synthesis Kings of War, German choral event Human Requiem, flamenco dance/music show Fla.Co.Men and Belgian play Us/Them. Kings of War – Festival Theatre

Dutch director Ivo van Hove and his company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, who brought their acclaimed six-hour political drama Roman Tragedies to the 2014 Adelaide Festival, return this year with Kings of War. Slightly shorter at four-and-a-half hours, Kings of War is a conflation of five plays – Henry V, Henry VI Part I, II and III, and Richard III. A cast of 17 actors perform on a “war room” set, with onstage action counterpointed with offstage events via cinema-sized high-definition screens. Kings of War runs from this Saturday until Tuesday. Human Requiem – Adelaide Showgrounds

The audience is at the centre of this choral interpretation of Johannes Brahms’ 19^th-century masterpiece. Performed by German choir Rundfunkchor Berlin,  the show blurs the distinction between audience and performer, with choir members, soloists and pianists dispersed among the crowd. The performers move throughout the space, at times soaring through the air on swings hanging from the ceiling, offering audiences a chance to experience the thrill of live performance at arm’s length.

Fla.Co.Men – Her Majesty’s Theatre

International flamenco star Israel Galván Burns will dance alongside six musicians as part of this Adelaide Festival exclusive performance. The show’s title: Fla.Co.Men is an inversion of the word flamenco, and reflects Galván’s different take on the dance style. Details here.

Us/Them – Space Theatre

Belgian theatre company BRONKS’ Us / Them is inspired by events in 2004 in Beslan when Chechen terrorists took 1200 hostages in a school siege that left 300 dead – two-thirds of them children. Us / Them explores the events through the eyes of a girl and boy who look back at the siege in hindsight. Read InDaily‘s review here.

Waqt al-tagheer: Time of Change – ACE Open

New Muslim-Australian art collective eleven is presenting its first major exhibition of painting, installation, video, photography, text, sculpture and virtual-realty artworks at ACE Open as part of the Adelaide Festival program. Waqt al-tagheer: Time of Change examines individual experiences of timeframes – current, recent or historical – that have altered personal understandings of being. The exhibition runs until April 21. Riverbank Palais

The Riverbank Palais on the bank of the River Torrens is hosting a Festival program of talks, artist forums, long lunches, late-night DJs and live music. Featured artists this weekend include rock group Regurgitator (tonight), singer-songwriter Lior and dance pop band Art vs Science (Saturday) and folk singer Julia Jacklin and English electronic duo Mount Kimbie (Sunday). The Cat Empire’s Harry James Angus, singer-songwriter Archie Roach and soul singer Lee Fields and the Expressions also feature on the program. Events run until March 18. Ticket information here. 

2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art

The Art Gallery of SA, Samstag Museum of Art, Jam Factory and Adelaide Botanic Gardens are hosting exhibitions in this year’s Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Thirty Australian artists interpret the theme Divided Worlds through photography, painting, sculpture, installation and moving image. This Tuesday the Art Gallery will host a lunchtime talk led by senior curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs Julie Robinson and Divided Worlds artist Patrick Pound. Murder in the Wine Cellar – National Wine Centre

Channel your inner detective at this murder-mystery dinner at the National Wine Centre. When a bride is found dead in the wine cellar, world-famous wedding planner Isla Grace calls on the audience to try and solve the murder before the (pretend) police arrive. Music and dinner are provided and guests are encouraged to dress in character.

Cirque Africa 2.0 – Hindmarsh Square

Join MC Papa Africa and his troupe of acrobats and performers for a re-take on their top selling 2017 Fringe show. Many of the performers and acts are new, with their year’s performance including ladder balancing, body contortions and unicycle riding. InDaily awarded it 4.5 stars in this review.

Joel Creasey’s Blonde Bombshell – Garden of Unearthly Delights

Self-described fame whore and reality-TV loser Joel Creasey will perform his stand-up show Blonde Bombshell this weekend, with limited tickets still available. Creasey’s latest show “slices, dices, sasses and smashes celebrities, pop culture and himself”. Anyone not in the room will be a target.

Mengele – Bakehouse Theatre

British actor Tim Marriott stars as the notorious Nazi doctor from Auschwitz who used Jewish prisoners for his “scientific” experiments. Marriott is joined on stage by Stefanie Rossi, whose character Azra’il saves the doctor from nearly drowning on a Brazilian beach. The play is described as a “sobering reminder of the horrors of concentration camps” in this InDaily review.

GRACE – Tuxedo Cat

British actress Katie Reddin-Clancy’s latest theatrical comedy is about an actress who, after losing her double act partner, steps on stage alone for the first time. The show has strong feminist undertones and deals with themes including power, love, and self-identity. More information here.

Bernstein on Stage – Festival Theatre

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will mark the 100^th anniversary of the birth of American composer Leonard Bernstein with a “musical extravaganza” of some of his greatest hits. Leading the centenary celebration will be Bernstein’s apprentice and conductor John Mauceri. Expect hits such as “New York, New York”, “Glitter and Be Gay”, “Tonight” and “Maria.” Purchase tickets here.

Openair Cinemas – Glenelg Beach

The American Express Opeanair Cinemas open this Thursday with a screening of Michael Gracey’s The Greatest Showman. All the Money in the World screens next Friday and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle screens next Saturday. DJs will entertain crowds on Friday evenings and food sampling will take place on Sundays.
