Australia Day

In the city: Following the annual Australia day parade (beginning at 6pm in Victoria Square), singers Ricki-Lee Coulter and Chris Sebastian will headline a free concert in Elder Park. A fireworks display will start at around 9.30pm. Details here.

At the bay: The City of Holdfast Bay will host a free family fun day from 10.30am until 2pm on the Glenelg foreshore, with live music, roving entertainment, giant games, face painting and other activities. Details here.

Survival Day at Semaphore: Tandanya will host this free event at their Grenfell Street site from 11am until 7pm. Celebrating Indigenous culture, it will feature live music including Eddie Peters, Twang Bangers, Of Desert & Sea and Jack Ansell, as well as market-style stalls and free workshops. Note: Venue changed due to hot weather.

Tarnanthi Sunday Sessions – Art Gallery of SA

To celebrate the final week of the Tarnanthi exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, the gallery is holding one last Sunday Session this weekend. The session, from 2pm-4pm, will feature folk singer Emily Wurrmara and folk/pop group The Bec Gollan Trio. Artists from Erub Island will also be hosting a masterclass and weaving workshop over the weekend. See details of these and other gallery events here.

Green Day’s American Idiot – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Featuring every song from Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot (and more), this rock musical is described as “the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post-9/11 Trumpian suburbia, discovering love, loss, drugs, sex and rock ‘n’ roll along the way”. Starring musicians Phil Jamieson (of Grinspoon) and Adalita (Magic Dirt), Green Day’s American Idiot is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre until Saturday. Read InDaily’s review here.

Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

Familiar faces Magda Szubanski, Manu Feildel and Julia Zemiro star in new Australian comedy The BBQ, which has an advance screening at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park on Friday. Also showing over the coming week are Star Wars: The Last Jedi (tonight), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Saturday), Lady Bird (Sunday), Back to the Future (Tuesday) and Downsizing (Wednesday). Jimmy Carr – Thebarton Theatre

Renowned British comedian Jimmy Carr will perform his Best Of, Ultimate, Gold, Greatest Hits stand-up show at the Thebarton Theatre tonight as part of the Australian leg of his world tour. Carr will re-hash favourite gags from his 15-year comedic career in a night which he promises will be full of one-liners and timeless jokes. Show starts at 8pm. Last time we checked tickets were still available.

Carnaval de Cuba Latin Spectacular – The Gov

La Bomba dance school in Hindmarsh will transform the Governor Hindmarsh into a Latino dance hall this Saturday night, with local band AhHum and Cuban dance duo Greydis Montero (from New Zealand) and Israel Ortiz (Queensland). Learn the basics of Latin dance before the professionals take to the stage. Carnaval de Cuba will kick off at 8pm; pre-sale tickets available for $15. Details here.

Sunset Sessions – Adelaide Festival Centre

This series of free live music sessions on the Adelaide Festival Centre Riverdeck and Northern Promenade continues until February 17. Cosmo Thundercat is scheduled to play from 6.20pm this Saturday, with other upcoming musicians including Kelly Menhennett (February 1), Ryan Martin John (February 9), Sitara (February 10), and Alison Coppe and David Mazzarelli (February 16). Pontoon Summer Series

The Pontoon Summer Series includes DJs, live music sessions and movies.

The Pontoon on the River Torrens is hosting acoustic music sessions, jazz nights, DJs and movie screenings throughout January. This weekend’s line-up includes duo Jazz it Up (Thursday), Stephen J / DJ Marc B (Saturday) and Matt Sammut / DJ Juddo (Sunday). Tuesday is movie night, Jessica D’Cruz (Yatri) will play on Wednesday, and Katia Labozzetta will perform next Thursday. Unley Night Market

Discover a plethora of street food, design stalls and live music at Market to Market’s inaugural Unley event on Friday night. Located on the rooftop behind Target on Unley Road, the market will feature a pop-up bar and international food, and will run from 5.30pm until 10pm. Entry via Arthur Street. Details here.

Crush – Adelaide Hills

Head to the Hills this long weekend for the three-day Crush festival, with wineries hosting a range of events including tastings, picnic lunches, degustation dinners, live music, theatre and garden games. Purchase an official souvenir Spiegelau wine glass for $10 and enjoy free entry to all non-ticketed events. Scheduled bus services will collect passengers from the Arkaba Hotel for an additional cost. Note: several wineries have cancelled or postponed their Crush events due to the predicted hot weather, so check the official website or social media for updates.

Toyer – Bakehouse Theatre

A “cat-and-mouse psychological thriller”, Toyer is a contemporary American play which purports to address “humanity’s vast ability to manipulate one another, our moral lawlessness, our wondrous gift for lying and the awful power of charisma”. This production, directed by Tony Knight, is playing at the Bakehouse Theatre until January 27.
