Gala Concert: AdYO Celebrates

From symphonic highlights from Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End to an orchestral arrangement of 1980s pub rock anthem The Final Countdown, Adelaide Youth Orchestra members will present a program of crowd-pleasers at their final concert for the year at Elder Hall at 3pm on Sunday. The Gala Concert will include the Adelaide Youth Wind, Adelaide Youth Sinfonia, Adelaide Youth Strings and the flagship Adelaide Youth Orchestra.

Random Acts of Light – Glenelg

This one-night event featuring art installations, projections and performances is the third in a series of Random Art events run by Holdfast Bay Council. Moseley Square buildings, including the Glenelg Town Hall, will be painted with colourful artworks made from light, and there will be incandescent sea creatures beneath the Glenelg Jetty and glowing crabs on the foreshore. Free and family-friendly, Random Acts of Light runs from 8-11pm on Saturday.

Glendi Greek Festival

Returning to Bonython Park on Saturday and Sunday, Glendi promises a weekend of music, dance, art and culture – as well as stallholders serving up traditional Greek food. For the full entertainment line-up, go here.

LastFRIDAY 

Designed to foster collaboration between bricks-and-mortar businesses and artists in North Adelaide, LastFRIDAY is hosting its final art, food and wine street party of the year from 4-8pm today (November 27). Five artists will paint the fence at 88 O’Connell Street, and there will be live music by Becky Blake and Conchilla, as well as free face painting and food and wine.

Feast Festival

A highlight of the closing weekend of Feast Festival will be the Picnic in the Park at Pinky Flat on the banks of the River Torrens on Sunday, with the family-friendly event including a dog show, tug-of-war, DJs and food trucks. You can also catch Feast shows including Michael Griffiths’ Sweet Dreams: Songs by Annie Lennox; Amelia Ryan is a Storm in a D-Cup, and theatre work Heavier Than Air, which highlights the experiences of LGBTIQ teachers. Epic Strauss – ASO

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s final “Great Classics” concert for the year will present Strauss’s sumptuous Also Sprach Zarathustra. Conducted by Arvo Volmer and featuring guest pianist Garrick Ohlsson, the Saturday evening performance at the Festival Theatre will also include Brahms’ Piano Concerto No 1 and Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No 3. Next weekend the ASO will join with The Zep Boys for a concert paying tribute to rockers Led Zeppelin.

Lucky Seven – The Gov

Adelaide swing group Lucky Seven are playing at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday night. They will be joined by The Satellites and Lady Voodoo, who will be launching their new EP Love Struck.

Adelaide Night Market

Held on the last Sunday of each month during daylight saving, Adelaide Night Market is located at Prince Henry Gardens on North Terrace in the city and features artisan gourmet produce and street food among an array of clothing, jewellery and craft. The Adelaide Night Market starts at 4pm and packs up at 8pm.

 Anh Do – Thebarton Theatre

Comedian, writer and actor Anh Do is bringing his stage show The Happiest Refugee to the Thebarton Theatre on Saturday. Based on Do’s memoir of the same name, it incorporates stand-up, stories, photos and filmed pieces that chart his life’s journey – from a refugee who travelled from Vietnam to Australia on a fishing boat, to lawyer and then entertainer.

The Popular Mechanicals – State Theatre

This play within a play follows the backstory of bumbling amateur thespians the Rude Mechanicals from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Described as a “hysterically funny mix of verse, song and dance”, it’s being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA at the Space Theatre until November 28. Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster – Vitalstatistix

Presented by Vitalstatistix at Waterside in Port Adelaide, Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster tells the story of a man, a woman and a duck – and much more besides. Creator-performer Nicola Gunn discusses the human condition and questions of morality within a performance incorporating music, dance and humour. Read more in InDaily’s review.

Adelaide Chamber Singers – with Greta Bradman

Celebrating 30 years since their first performance, the Adelaide Chamber Singers will present their final concert for the year at St Peter’s Cathedral on Saturday, with soprano Greta Bradman as special guest. Conducted by Carl Crossin the Celebration program will include Miserere Mei, Deus (Allegri) with Bradman; Kondalilla, by Stephen Leek; Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine, by Eric Whitacre, and the world premiere of How can I Keep from Singing, by Anne Cawrse.

Hollywood Retro Film Festival – Palace Nova

Twenty-two classic Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1960s are being screened at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas as part of the Hollywood Retro Film Festival. With a line-up including Gone With the Wind, Jane Eyre, Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve, it continues until December 16. See the full program here and read InDaily’s story on the festival here.

Björn Again – Festival Theatre

Abba tribute band Björn Again, which has performing since 1989, is bringing its Bang-a-Boomerang tour to the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre tonight (Friday). More info here.

Red Velvet – Independent Theatre

This play by English playwright and actor Lolita Chakrabarti recounts the true story of African-American actor Ira Aldridge, who saved the day at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden in 1833 when he took over the role of Othello after the lead actor collapsed on stage. Independent Theatre is presenting Red Velvet at the Goodwood Institute until November 28. Read InDaily’s review here.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries costume exhibition

Close to 50 costumes created by award-winning costume designer Marion Boyce and featured in ABC TV’s third series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries are on display in this exhibition at historic Ayres House Museum. Including themed rooms and interactive displays, the exhibition continues until February 14, 2016.

Tarnanthi art exhibitons

Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art exhibitions encompassing painting, sculpture, multi-media and other artforms continue at the Art Gallery of South Australia until January 17. Other continuing Tarnanthi exhibitons include the Archie Moore: Les Eaux d’Amoore perfume portraits at the Samstag Museum of Art, Tarnanthi Textiles at Tandanya, Shimmer at the Jam Factory, the Desart Photography Prize at the State Library, Near Horizons at the Migration Museum, and Nganmarra – the Container of Life at the Santos Museum of Economic Botany.
