Cuban music swings into country SA
Sabor a Cuba with Lazaro Numa are bringing music straight from the heart of Cuba to regional towns in South Australia.
Lazaro Numa will play in Burra on Sunday 24 April.
At first glance, a Cuban music night may not seem to fit with the vibe of small-town South Australia but that isn’t going to deter Sabor a Cuba who are headlining shows in Cummins, Streaky Bay and Burra as part of Country Arts SA ‘Shows on the Road’ tour.
CEO of Country Arts SA, Anthony Peluso, says that he hopes the concerts will encourage communities to get curious and have new experiences.
“The timing is perfect,” says Peluso.
“It’s a chance for the community to gather again, celebrate the culture and music of Cuba and even get up and dance.”
Adelaide-based trumpeter and composer Lazaro Numa’s passion for music developed at an early age.
His uncle was a sound engineer for the band Irakere so as a child Numa was taken to rehearsals nearly every day and says he was inspired by the band’s discipline and musicianship.
Numa left his hometown of Havana, Cuba in 2008 after finishing his studies in music.
Since then, he has expanded his career by playing in bands, working in Cuban clubs, and touring the world with a number of international acts. In recent years Numa has made an impact on the Adelaide music scene, performing at major events and festivals with his ensemble Sabor a Cuba.
Peluso says Country Arts SA helps hosts these events to help regional communities thrive through engagement with the arts. Country Arts SA’s role is to ensure that regional communities have access to the arts by presenting shows and working with galleries in the regions.
“As an organisation we are committed to supporting artists to live in the regions and develop their work while also connecting communities to a diversity of art and cultural events,” Peluso says.
Numa says that his goal is to bring Cuban musical heritage to the world.
“We can’t wait to bring the contagious Latin flavour to make you dance non-stop in Cummins, Streaky Bay and Burra,” he says.
Sabor a Cuba will be performing to a sold-out crowd in Cummins, but last-minute tickets are available for the Streaky Bay show on Friday and Burra on Sunday from the Country Arts SA website.
