GRAMP, HARDY, HILL SMITH PRIZE for OUTSTANDING WINE OF PROVENANCE
sponsored by Gray Management Group
won by Saltram Wine Estate, Class 67 Exhibit 19
Saltram No 1 Shiraz, 2009, 2004, 1996

The Barossa’s Saltram Estate Wines has won the Royal Adelaide Wine Show’s two most coveted trophies.

The 2010 Saltram Mamre Shiraz was named the most outstanding red wine in show, while the Saltram No 1 Shiraz (2009, 2004 and 1996 vintages) won the Gramp, Hardy, Hill Smith Prize for Outstanding Wine of Provenance – an award that assesses three vintages of a wine, with judges looking for a strong sense of style and regionality

The Saltram Mamre Shiraz was also named best shiraz in show, and Saltram winemaker Shavaughn Wells was recognised for being the winemaker behind the most outstanding red wine.

Other red wine trophies went to Xanadu Wines, Margaret River, for their Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 and McLaren Vale’s Rosemount Estate, who won best red wine under $20 for their Rosemount District Traditional Red 2011. Two Langhorne Creek wineries won trophies – Lake Breeze, in the best other red blend category for their Arthur’s Reserve 2009, and Bremerton, whose Special Release Malbec 2012 was named best other varietal red.

Chardonnay proved itself back on-trend in the white wine section, with the Yarra Valley’s Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2011 named best white wine in show and winemaker Andrew Fleming lauded as the winemaker behind the wine. Coldstream Hills also took out the best chardonnay trophy.

Other Victorian-based wineries to perform well in the white wine section included Brown Brothers, who won best sauvignon blanc for their Tasmanian Devil’s Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2013; Baileys of Glenrowan who picked up the best apera, topaque or muscat trophy for their Baileys Winemakers Selection Rare Muscat NV; and Yellowglen who won the best sparkling award for their Yellowglen XV Regional Piccadilly Sparkling 2004, made from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills. De Bortoli, from New South Wales, won the best sweet white table wine for its Noble One 2010.

Echelon Wine Partners won the best riesling and best white wine under $20 trophies for their Zepelin Aged Eden Valley Riesling 2009; Tyrrells’ Vat 1 Semillon 2005 won best Semillon; and Chateau Tanunda won the best dry white trophy for its The Three Graces Marsanne Viognier Roussanne 2012.

Announced earlier this evening at the Adelaide Showground, the Royal Adelaide Wine Show is the most prestigious in Australia.

Chairman of judges Sue Hodder said the 2013 show had attracted 2,608 entries from 328 wineries and schools.

“A total of 192 gold medals (8%), 243 silver medals (10%) and 815 bronze medals (32%) were awarded,” Ms Hodder said.

“Our judging panel was made up of experienced industry professionals, including winemakers, retailers, Masters of Wine, educators and journalists.

“We were also delighted this year to introduce a national schools competition, open to all schools across Australia who make wine. Fifty-two wines from ten schools have been received, and we look forward to announcing the trophy winners at the National School Wine Seminar at the Adelaide Showground on October 16.”

Members of the public can sample the trophy winning wines at the Taste of the Best public event, on tomorrow evening (Friday, October 4) at the Adelaide Showground. For details visit www.thewineshow.com.au
