The Helpmann Academy InReview Mentorship is designed to connect experienced arts writers with emerging critics, as part of a project to strengthen the professional coverage of arts and culture in South Australia.

Applications open today for the first mentorship, to coincide with the launch of InReview – a new arts and culture platform produced by Solstice Media, the publisher of InDaily.

The successful mentee will be matched with an experienced InReview mentor who will work with them in all aspects of writing reviews as well as provide career advice.

The mentorship will be conducted over eight hours per week for 10 weeks. Throughout the program, the mentee will build their skills with the aim of producing a number of written reviews for publication on InReview.

Helpmann Academy CEO Jane MacFarlane said the mentorship was a great opportunity for emerging creatives to diversify their skills.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with InReview to offer this mentorship,” she said.

“This is a valuable and unique opportunity for an emerging creative to gain the essential skills and experiences required to enter the world of arts writing. This program could have tangible employment outcomes, as well as giving the participant the opportunity to contribute to South Australian cultural commentary.”

Solstice Media editorial director David Washington said the mentorship program was a rare opportunity for aspiring critics to begin to learn the art of critique.

“We are so pleased that the Helpmann Academy is working with us on this project,” he said.
