Lunar New Year Street Party – Chinatown

Taking place on Chinatown’s Moonta and Gouger streets from 11am-10pm on Saturday, the annual Lunar New Year party will feature live music and dance performances showcasing Asian culture, stalls, exhibitions, martial arts demos, food, fireworks and what we’re told will be SA’s “biggest roving lion dance ever”. Laneway Festival / Temple of Love – Port Adelaide

Laneway Festival returns to Harts Mill at Port Adelaide today (Friday), with a line-up including AB Original, Dune Rats, Gang of Youths, Luca Brasi, Tourist, Sampa the Great and Tash Sultana. The festival has once again teamed up with local arts organisation Vitalstatistix, which has turned its historic Waterside home into “an artful indoor haven” dubbed Temple of Love.

First Fridays: Art Awakening ­– Art Gallery of SA

The gallery’s First Fridays after-hours event tonight (Friday) will include guided tours of the exhibition Awakening: Art of Buddhism. There will also be a talk about the art of Buddhism by curator of Asian Art James Bennett, performances by musicians Renee Pounsett and Oisima, and an open meditation class. Details here.

Have Violin, Will Travel – Gigs at Grainger

Marking the return this year of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s series of gigs at its Grainger Studio in Hindley Street, Have Violin, Will Travel features jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto (above) and conductor Benjamin Northey. Ferraretto promises to draw on his experience of performing with artists such as Natacha Atlas, Amjad Ali Khan and Eska to take audiences on a “global adventure”. Performances are tonight (Friday) and tomorrow.

RAW Comedy state final – Nexus Arts

Aspiring stand-up stars will take part in a battle of wits at the South Australian final of the RAW Comedy competition tonight at Nexus Arts (Lion Arts Centre), with the winner earning a spot at the national final in Melbourne. RAW Comedy is the country’s biggest open-mic comp, with previous competitors including Hannah Gadsby, Josh Thomas and Luke McGregor. Doors open at Nexus at 7.30pm.

Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

There will be advance screenings this weekend of the Oscar-nominated films Hidden Figures (Friday) and Fences (Sunday) at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park. Other upcoming screenings include Sing (Saturday), Loving (Tuesday), and the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Wednesday). Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown. Full program here.

RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider. Coal Miner’s Daughter – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Singer Amber Joy Poulton pays homage to country star Loretta Lynn in this touring music show, which also features musical theatre actress Lizzie Moore as Patsy Cline and musician Denis Surmon as Conway Twitty. There are two evening performances at Her Majesty’s Theatre tonight (Friday) and tomorrow, plus a Saturday matinee. Details here.

Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures Exhibition

Sculptures made of metal, wood, ceramic, glass and even old gumboots are on display along the Esplanade at Brighton in this annual exhibition which continues until February 5. More than 100 sculptors from Adelaide and interstate have contributed works this year, with more delicate pieces being shown in the Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubrooms and an adjacent tent. James Taylor and His All-Star Band – Botanic Park

Back in Australia for the first time since his tour with Carole King in 2010, James Taylor is playing an open-air show in Botanic Park next Thursday (February 9). The singer-songwriter is known for songs including “Fire and Rain”, “Country Road” and “Carolina in My Mind”, and scored a Grammy nomination with his latest album, released in 2015. Bernard Fanning and Kasey Chambers will join him as guests in Botanic Park.

ASO’s Rhapsody & Symphony – Town Hall

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2017 in its Great Classics series will be conducted by Nicholas Carter and feature pianist Simon Tedeschi next Saturday at the Adelaide Town Hall. The program comprises Gershwin’s jazz-infused Rhapsody in Blue, Berlioz’s Le Corsaire and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2.

Fleurieu Film Festival

McLaren Vale will host two evenings of cinema under the stars next weekend during the Fleurieu Film Festival. Saturday (February 10) will see a free outdoor screening of the Scott Hicks film The Boys are Back (set on the Fleurieu) at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitors & Information Centre, with pre-movie entertainment, plus food and wine available. And on Sunday the festival awards presentation will be held at Serafino Winery, with a screening of the 10 finalist short films. Details here.

Curious Beasts: Animal prints from Dürer to Goya – SA Museum

This exhibition highlights the “beautiful and bizarre” imagery found in animal prints of the 15^th to the early 19^th centuries in the British Museum’s collection, including works by well-known artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya and George Stubbs. Curious Beasts, which also showcases rare items from the South Australian Museum‘s own collection, continues until Sunday.

Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition – State Library

Ninety stunning photos are on display in this exhibition showcasing winners and finalists from the 2016 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism. They range from harrowing images of war to those capturing triumphant moments in sport and the beauty of artistic achievement.
