Shadowland – Her Majesty’s Theatre

A fusion of shadow theatre, dance, circus and music, US company Pilobolus’s Shadowland  blends images projected on a screen with front-of screen choreography to create a magical show that is both dreamlike and acrobatic. It is accompanied  by a score by American composer David Poe. There are performances at Her Majesty’s Theatre until Sunday.

ASO’s Romantic Concerto – Adelaide Town Hall

Russian pianist Alexei Volodin makes his debut with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in this concert, performing Brahms’ powerful Piano Concerto No 2. Conducted by Nicholas Carter, the Romantic Concerto program also includes the Adelaide premiere of Australian composer James Ledger’s “Hollow Kings” and Mozart’s Symphony No 40. Performances are tonight (Friday) and Saturday night at the Town Hall.

AdYO’s Sweeping Romance – Elder Hall

The romance continues on Sunday, with this Adelaide Youth Orchestra concert featuring guest violinist Elizabeth Layton. Beginning at 3pm, Sweeping Romance will feature Tchaikovsky’s popular Symphony No 4, Chausson’s Poème for Violin and Orchestra and Stefan Cassomenos’s new work Sinfonietta.

The 39 Steps – Dunstan Playhouse

Described as a “wonderfully deranged comedy”, the stage adaptation of The 39 Steps replicates Alfred Hitchcock’s entire 1935 film, with just four actors playing 139 roles. It is being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA at the Dunstan Playhouse, with final performances this weekend. Read InDaily’s review here.

Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA

Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. Red Sky Morning – Bakehouse Theatre

Australian playwright Tom Holloway’s Red Sky Morning, presented for the first time in South Australia, is set over the course of a single day in regional Australia, with the voices of three family members intertwined to tell a story of isolation with “moments missed, dreams not shared and the tragedy of the everyday”. It is being presented under the State Theatre Company’s State Umbrella program, with performances at the Bakehouse Theatre until September 30.

The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition – Ayers House

More than 50 costumes worn by actors includes Kate Winslet and Sarah Snook in Australian film The Dressmaker are on display in this exhibition at Ayers House Museum until December 11. The display, developed for the National Trust by award-winning designer Marion Boyce, offers a taste of 1950s Parisian couture. Details here.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year – SA Museum

Stunning photographs capturing the natural beauty of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea bioregion – including flora, fauna and landscapes – are on display in this exhibition at the SA Museum until October 3.

The Whitlams – The Gov

After a national tour last year, ARIA award winners The Whitlams are back at the Governor Hindmarsh tonight (Friday) and Saturday, promising to play all the favourite tracks from their 24-year career. Next Saturday night (September 17), The Gov will be hosting Frenzal Rhomb, who are celebrating the release of a new album of old songs celebrating their silver jubilee year.

Experimenta Recharge – Samstag Museum

Experimenta Recharge, the 6th International Biennial of Media Art, features the work of 20 Australian and international artists who employ, critique and experiment with media and technology. The exhibition draws on disciplines and influences such as photography, biology, sculpture and installation, electromagnetics, sound art, robotics, gaming, dance, the internet, performance, 3D printing, animation, film, video and analogue television. It is at Samstag Museum of Art until September 23.

Fiona Hall – All the King’s Men – Art Gallery of SA

All the King’s Men is the masterwork from Fiona Hall’s 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition Wrong Way Time. The installation includes 20 sculptures suspended in space that are made from military uniforms, with mask-like heads and ghostly, skeletal bodies. The installation will be at the Art Gallery of SA until December 21.
