There’s a smorgasbord of music, food, theatre and art events around South Australia this weekend.

InDaily’s picks include the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, gigs by Dragon at The Gov  and Beat Spacek at Nexus Live, the Best of the SA Screen Awards, and State Theatre shows Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and This is Where We Live.

Dragon – The Gov

Touring to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their album Body & The Beat, Australian rock band Dragon will be playing a two-hour set on Saturday night at The Gov. The band will play the entire ’80s album, followed by their top 10 hits as voted by Facebook followers. Fans can expect to hear the likes of “April Sun in Cuba”, “Celebrate”, “Speak No Evil” and “Are You Old Enough”. Doors open at 7.30pm.

Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend

The food and wine producers of the Clare Valley region have again banded together to present a  Gourmet Weekend, with 18 cellar door events and 10 ticketed events. A highlight will be regional food group Clare Valley Cuisine’s Annual Gourmet Market on Saturday from 9am to 3pm, featuring local produce and cooking demonstrations at Ennes Park, next to the Clare Town Hall.

Best of SA Screen Awards

South Australian Screen Awards winners will be announced at a gala event tonight, with nominated films to be screened throughout the weekend at the Mercury Cinema. They include the feature films One Eyed Girl and The Infinite Man, as well as documentary, comedy and drama shorts, music videos and animations. Session times are online.

This is Where We Live

Part of the State Theatre Company’s State Education, this play is about two teenagers caught between the savage world of the school playground and the war zones at home who form an intense connection which offers each a glimmer of hope in their small-town hell. It is playing at the Space Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, until Saturday, before heading to outer metropolitan areas and regional centres. Read InDaily’s review here.

Beat Spacek – Nexus Live

Tonight you can catch Beat Spacek, the latest project from UK vocalist/producer Steve Spacek, at Nexus Live. The session also includes drummer, producer, DJ and visual artist Julien Dyne and  “drum-machine obsessive” Inkswel. You can get a taste of what’s in store here. Doors open at 8pm at Nexus Arts, corner North Terrace and Morphett Street.

Adelaide Street Food Festival

This tiny street food event hosted by the Flinders Street Market brings street food lovers and hawkers together for two days of exotic food and drink. Awards will be given out for the Best Street Food Dish and the Best Market Stall Design. More information can be found here.

Small Gods – Bakehouse Theatre

Small Gods was the 13^th novel in the popular Discworld series by renowned fantasy author Terry Pratchett. SA’s Unseen Theatre Company says this adaptation by Pamela Munt was planned will before Pratchett died two months ago, but is hopefully a fitting tribute.  The main targets of his wit in the tale are religion and intolerance, with Unseen promising the play will be full of comedy, action and drama. It’s playing at Bakehouse Theatre from May 15-30.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

Australian playwright Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll tells the story of a pair of Queensland cane cutters who travel to Melbourne every summer to share their holidays with two barmaids. Considered an iconic play in Australia’s theatre history, it is being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA at the Dunstan Playhouse until May 16. Read InDaily’s review here.

Spanish Film Festival

The 2015 Spanish Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas features a line-up of Spanish-language features across a range of genres. This weekend’s screenings include the documentary Finding Gaston, about Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio (see InDaily review), romantic comedy Spanish Affair and Spike Lee-produced Colombian drama Dirty Hands. South Australia’s rich and colourful history is the focus of more than 500 events around the state over the month of May, including cemetery tours, bar yarns, open days, workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and bus trips. The full program is online.

Whisky Live 

Whisky aficionados attending this event at Bonython Hall on Saturday and Sunday will have the opportunity to taste a pre-release 15-year-old Laphroaig to mark the Scottish distillery’s 200^th birthday this year. It will be one of dozens of whiskies available for sampling at the event, which also includes classes and presentations. Details here.

Ben Salter – The Barn

Australian singer-songwriter Ben Salter will showcase his new solo album, The Stars My Destination, at a gig at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Thebarton on Sunday afternoon. Salter is a founding member of Giants of Science, The Gin Club and ARIA-nominated band Wilson Pickers.

Basil Sellers Art Prize 4

Opening this weekend at the Samstag Museum of Art, this touring exhibition features work by artists who participated in the most recent Basil Sellers Art Prize, which explores Australia’s obsession with sport and sporting culture. The 2014 prize was won by Indigenous artist Tony Albert for a work consisting of a painted target over which are hung 23 small framed works comprising watercolours, photographs and collage, and small vignettes made of found objects. Other artists whose work is on display include Shaun Gladwell, Narelle Autio, Rob McLeish and Khaled Sabsabi. The exhibition continues until July 3.

Much Ado About Nothing

Audiences are transported to an English summer garden at the end of World War II for the University of Adelaide Theatre Guild’s production of this popular Shakespearean comedy. Directed by Megan Dansie (Richard III, Romeo & Juliet), Much Ado About Nothing is being presented at the Little Theatre in The Cloisters at Adelaide University until Saturday.

Punuku Tjukurpa – SA Museum

This touring exhibition at the South Australian Museum is a retrospective of work from the Maruku Arts company, based in Uluru. Punuku Tjukurpa represents three generations of artists for whom the tradition of wood carving has been passed down, and is described as a view into one of Australia’s finest art movements. The exhibition continues until May 17.
