Justice denied: Pro bono service axed after Government cuts funding

A free legal service for disadvantaged South Australians forced to represent themselves in serious civil law matters – which helps save hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs each year – will close after the State Government axed the funding for its not-for-profit provider.


New DPP must seek court approval to prosecute

Incoming Director of Public Prosecutions Martin Hinton may not be able to prosecute cases in court for at least two years after assuming his high-profile role in October, unless he is given special dispensation to do so, under long-standing legal rules established to avoid perceived conflicts of interest.


SA Attorney-General and EO Commissioner in open conflict over budget

A simmering funding dispute between the state’s Equal Opportunity Commission and Attorney-General has openly flared, with the commissioner hitting back at Vickie Chapman after she branded the cash-strapped agency’s spending $50,000 on a public relations firm an  “absurdity” that was “not justified or sustainable”.
