The local government sector is pushing to change an “outdated” state law that sees Adelaide ratepayers pay Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation millions of dollars in compulsory advertising, in a new blow to the media company’s ailing suburban newspaper stable.
News Corp’s flagship suburban masthead in SA, The City, will stop being printed, while home delivery of the weekly Messenger north of Adelaide will cease from this month amid a broader local restructure at the media company that has already claimed at least 10 journalists’ jobs this month.
