No love for Amor as league bans Adelaide coach

Adelaide United coach Guillermo Amor will be forced to watch Saturday’s clash against Sydney FC from the grandstand after he was sanctioned by the A-League’s match review panel for touching a referee.

Amor has been issued a one-game touchline ban for grabbing fourth official Adam Fielding by the arm in the 68th minute of Adelaide’s 3-1 defeat to Perth Glory on Friday night.

The incident has also been referred to the A-League’s disciplinary and ethics committee, which has the power to impose a longer suspension.

The usually placid Amor lost his cool when Andy Keogh scored a header to put Perth 2-1 up, despite an apparent foul on Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic.

There was no malice in the contact but it was enough to convince referee Jarred Gillett to give Amor his marching orders.

Amor defended his actions after the match, saying he was merely trying to get Fielding’s attention.

“When you don’t speak good, some language, normally you use the hands, and the movement. And this is normal,” he said.

“With the players sometimes it’s the same. Normal action. I always respect the referees, his job. I know it’s sometimes difficult, because deciding in one second.”

The disciplinary and ethics committee’s hearing will take place early next week.

Adelaide United declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Football Federation Australia has punished yet another A-League manager for speaking out against referees, fining Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic $3000 for his round-six post-match comments.

FFA found Popovic guilty of breaching the body’s National Code of Conduct after he questioned referee Jarred Gillett over a missed penalty by Jason Geria on Jumpei Kasakumi in his side’s 3-0 loss to Melbourne Victory.

A-League boss Greg O’Rourke has named the decision as one of 11 refereeing errors from this season’s opening six rounds.
