The star midfielder joins the Eagles following 15 years and four premierships with the Hawks after publicly expressing his desire this week for a move to Perth.

The Hawks will receive picks 52, 70 and 88 in this year’s AFL draft in exchange for the 34-year-old, with picks 54 and 72 headed to West Coast.

Mitchell revealed on Wednesday he was considering the move after it was proposed by Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson in private conversation two weeks ago.

The 307-game player had been in discussions to join the Eagles as a coach after his playing career ended.

“My level of respect for the West Coast Eagles as a football club has been high for a long time,” Mitchell said in a statement today.

“The fact the process was so smooth and seamless shows the level of professionalism and respect from all parties.

“The list is a really exciting one. I’m really looking forward to getting on the training track with some of their young up-and-coming players.”

Clarkson said the former captain’s contribution to Hawthorn over his 307 games had been invaluable.

“Sam has cemented himself as a decorated servant of our club,” Clarkson said.
