Swan’s future has been up in the air since the 32-year-old suffered a serious foot injury in round one of the AFL season.

The 2011 Brownlow medallist announced today he would not play on in 2017, ending his 258-game career with the Magpies.

“That’s a wrap,” he posted on Instagram alongside an image of his boots and locker.

“To everyone that supported me through the ups and downs just know it meant more to me than you probably know.”

Swan broke three bones in his foot, including a Lisfranc fracture, in the opening minutes of the Magpies’ season-opening clash with Sydney.

“I’m sad to finish up,” he wrote.

“But can’t wait for the next part of my life to start to invest more time into my friends and family who have invested 15 years of there life into mine.”

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said last night Swan “has been – no he is – a gun”.

“An absolute gun and a champion,” he said.

“We farewelled a couple of our boys today, premiership players (Brent Macaffer and Alan Toovey).

“It’s never easy to come to the end of a football career and let that go, because you give so much to it.”

Meanwhile, Buckley confirmed embattled spearhead Travis Cloke will be recalled for his side’s clash with Hawthorn on Sunday.

Cloke has been dropped three times this year and played a total of 12 games, leading to speculation he will be traded at the end of the season.

“Clokey will play. We can’t have the to and fro going through the week. It’s just ridiculous,” Buckley said, referencing the near-constant scrutiny on Cloke.
