Week off could work against Adelaide: Pyke

Adelaide coach Don Pyke is taking no solace from his rested players hosting a North Melbourne outfit with just a six-day break in Thursday night’s AFL game.

The Crows enjoyed their bye weekend while the Roos lost to Hawthorn by nine points last Friday night in a bruising battle – which also preceded a bruising fallout.

“History would say that may work both ways,” Pyke said of the different lead-ins for the clubs ahead of their Adelaide Oval encounter.

“Sometimes you come off a bye and there’s a feeling that maybe you’re not quite in sync with what you’re doing.

“We’ll come in fresh. But teams win off a six-day break all the time so I don’t think it gives us any real advantage.”

Pyke said Adelaide, currently eighth and two wins behind the third-placed Kangaroos, used their break to recharge mentally as well as physically.

“It was good for our players, a nice chance to get a physical break but also a mental break and really set sights for the last half of the year,” he said.

“Whether it came at a good time or not, time will tell. But it was a good for the guys to get a bit of a spell.”

Pyke expected Kangaroos players to be unaffected by the controversy surrounding North coach Brad Scott this week regarding his comments about umpires after the loss to Hawthorn.

“I would be surprised if it has any influence,” he said.
