Shield final: WA hopes for pitch tricks
Either Victorian skipper Matthew Wade (left) or West Australian captain Adam Voges will lift the Shield at the end of today's play.
Batsman Marcus Harris reckons the Bellerive pitch might work in Western Australia’s favour as the underdogs try to overcome Victoria on the last day of the Sheffield Shield final.
Thanks in part to a day-four century by the 22-year-old, who remains unbeaten on 129, WA are 2-240 in their second innings with a 280-run lead.
Victoria will look to adopt a leisurely pace at the crease in their second innings with the knowledge that a draw will deliver them the Shield on points.
The Warriors, however, need an outright win and after their bowling group took a seven-wicket haul on Tuesday to dismiss Victoria for 381, Harris is confident they can again perform.
“It’s quite a tough wicket to score on if you set a good field with the ball getting soft,” he said.
“When we did that (on Tuesday), we dried the runs up and we took some wickets.”
Harris concedes, however, as shown by his time in the middle, there are still runs to be made.
“But there are areas that if you put the ball in the right spot something will happen, there are some cracks outside off-stump to both left-handers and right-handers, and there’re a few little plates.
“All we can hope is it keeps getting a bit worse.”
Victorian coach Greg Shipperd said both sides are still in the game.
“Hopefully our batting group have got a batting-intelligent performance in them,” he said.
With an early declaration on the cards for WA on Wednesday, play is due to resume at 10am (AEDT) with Harris and skipper Adam Voges (15 not out).
