The Kookaburras have entered the post-Charlesworth era in dominant fashion, thrashing fellow Commonwealth Games finalists India 4-0 to open their four-game series in Perth.

In their first game under the newly-installed Graham Reid the world champions impressed as Glenn Simpson marked his return from a broken ankle with a goal on Tuesday night.

It was Reid’s first game riding solo with the clipboard, having shared duties with Paul Gaudoin as Australia claimed Commonwealth gold in Glasgow before being appointed the main man in September.

Rising star Jeremy Hayward opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a typically powerful strike from a penalty corner, before Jake Whetton doubled the advantage just before halftime.

The second half was marked by both new and familiar faces, with 22-year-old Jeremy Edwards grabbing his first international goal before Simpson converted a penalty corner five minutes later to seal the rout.

Replacing Ric Charlesworth, who stepped down after guiding Australia to the gold medal at this year’s World Cup, is not expected to be an easy task but Reid said he was satisfied with the win and would’ve seen enough positive signs ahead of next month’s Champions Trophy in India.

“(It is) a reasonable start,” he said.

“We don’t care about the score, it’s about how we’re playing and we were reasonably happy with how we played.

“There are lots of things we’ve got to work on. Our circle efficiency is one of the major things we’re trying to work on and there’s a lot of work there still to do.

“We still made a lot of opportunities and didn’t finish off so that was a little disappointing but some good efforts.”

The teams face off again on Wednesday, before matches on Saturday and Sunday to close out the series.
