Sports wrap

Zimbabwe's Prosper Utseya ( L) and Tendai Chatara

Australia’s cricketers are in a spin in Zimbabwe – and without their captain; golfer Jason Day is in the hunt in the Deutsche Bank tournament in the US; Sharapova is out of the US Open tennis and Port Adelaide’s Jay Schulz finished second in the Coleman Medal race.

Here’s the wrap:

CRICKET – Australia’s first ODI loss to the African minnows in 31 years was a disaster from the selection table to the playing field and could have far more serious consequences than plummeting the team from first to fourth in the world rankings.

Captain Michael Clarke is on the next plane home after re-injuring his hamstring during his brave knock of 68 not out in Australia’s 9-209, which was chased down with three wickets and 12 balls to spare.

Clarke will now be racing the clock to prove his fitness for October’s Test tour against Pakistan in the UAE.

Capitulating against a team that can’t afford assistant coaches, and whose players must work second jobs, sits alongside the infamous 50-over loss to Bangladesh in 2005 and the 1983 World Cup defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe as a historic low for Australian cricket.

Six days earlier Australia punished 10th-ranked Zimbabwe by 198 runs.

“There’s probably not enough expletives in the English language at the moment for the way I’m feeling,” said Lehmann.

“It’s just embarrassing for everyone involved in the touring party, and I hope they’re hurting.

“They should be.”

Only three Australian batsmen made it past 20, with Clarke’s courageous 68 not out on one leg about all that held the total of 9-209 together – a record low score against battlers Zimbabwe.

After bucking the trend so far this tri-series and electing to bat first, Australia couldn’t cope with Zimbabwe’s spin battalion who combined to take 6-117 from 36 overs on a raging turner.

In response, Australia were under-equipped for the conditions, with not enough support for Nathan Lyon (4-44 from 10) in the spin department.

Zimbabwean captain Elton Chigumbura’s unbeaten 52 led his team to one of their greatest wins.

GOLF – Rory McIlroy is making a charge at the US PGA Deutsche Bank Championship as the leaderboard packed on day three at TPC Boston.

McIlroy matched the day’s best round with a 7-under 64 and now sits two shots behind 54-hole leader Russell Henley.

Joining McIlroy in a share of third are Australia’s Jason day and USA’s Chris Kirk.

Another Aussie, Geoff Ogilvy, shot 65 Sunday to be in 11th-place.

RUGBY LEAGUE – Manly left it until the final second to keep their grasp on top spot on the NRL ladder, the minor premiership now theirs for the taking in the final round of the regular season after a thrilling 26-25 win over Penrith.

TENNIS – Caroline Wozniacki has sent Maria Sharapova packing at the US Open, reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-4 2-6 6-2 win, her first over the five-time grand slam champion since 2011.

SOCCER – Liverpool handed Mario Balotelli a debut and reasserted their Premier League title credentials with a 3-0 win at Tottenham, while Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at Leicester City.

BASKETBALL – The Boomers are back on track at the basketball World Cup after thumping South Korea by 34 points in their second group game.
