FEATURE LISTING: Live the high life at Belair

Former cruise company director Dean Brazier and wife Debra are selling their renovated three-level Hamptons-style home at Belair with elevated views and a swimming pool, all surrounded by a picturesque parcel of native vegetation.

Debra and Dean Brazier would have liked another few years to enjoy the lifestyle afforded by their beloved Belair family home, but the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced their decision to sell the address sooner than anticipated.

Formerly a director of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which has since been liquidated, Dean is working in a contract role while awaiting the industry’s slow recovery.

The couple has decided to list 10 Centre Way, Belair, for sale by private treaty with a price guide of $1.4 to $1.5 million.

Having enjoyed living in the area during the past four years, Debra says the couple takes solace in that they have purchased their next home within the same postcode.

“I’ll miss a lot of things,” says Debra. “The home just has a lovely feel about it.”

Debra had seen the home listed to market previously and felt that they were given a second chance when it was listed again. They purchased the home in 2017.

“I always thought it was pretty; it’s quite an English-style house and I loved those views out the back,” says Debra.

“I saw it on the market again so we had to come and see it. It had great bones, but it needed a lot of updating. Much of the woodwork was that old-fashioned dark teak colour.”

The couple was keen to get stuck into renovating and began pulling down a wall the first day they got the keys.

“I had a builder booked for the second day so he started work straight away,” says Debra.

“Then, the tradies were in and out constantly and it took three months to do the big jobs.”

Much of the slate flooring, dark timbers, furnishings and dark carpets were overhauled to give the home a fresh look.

The wall of an upstairs study was demolished to create one open-plan living and meals space that would capitalise on the view.

“All the work has made such a difference and just brightens the house to create a nice, fresh feel,” says Debra.

The home provides views of the Adelaide city skyline from both shared and private rooms.

Across multiple levels, the home boasts four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a powder room, a large study, entertaining spaces and a cellar.

“When we first bought the home, I would walk into the kitchen and think “wow” – the sparkling lights of the city at night time remind me of Christmas.”

The couple had planned to renovate the balcony and upper floor so that it would provide floor-to-ceiling window views, but a new owner may want to take inspiration from their ideas.

“I was envisaging sitting on the balcony at night with just glass at the front so when it’s dark it’d be like you are floating on the sky because you wouldn’t see any railings,” she says.

However, the open verandah provides a perfect spot to sit and be immersed in the local wildlife.

“The kookaburras are always laughing and flocks of parakeets flying over, so there’s always something to watch or listen to.

“It’s really nice to sit there on the balcony and have a drink and listen to all the birds.

“We have a tree next to the balcony where a koala comes along every two or three weeks when the weather’s good.”

From the master bedroom, there are clear views of the city with sliding glass doors to let in the fresh Hills air.

“You never get sick of it,” Debra says.

“Even in the winter you wake up and open the curtains in the bedroom, and it’s just pure white. Within an hour, it all changes and you can see the rain moving up the hill in stages.”

The home sits on more than 2500sqm that is planted with Australian natives.

From the back gate, you can walk through the bush to meet up with local walking trails.

“It’s been quite manageable for a big plot,” says Debra.

“When we first got here, I lost a few plants in the first year because the irrigation wasn’t up to standard, so that’s all been fixed and we’ve got full irrigation front and back.

“Now we have mostly Australian natives and succulents, which are hardier.

“It’s been a great house for a family. I’ll definitely miss the views and the nice neighbours, too.”

The sale is being handled by Peter Alexandrou and Matthew Tuck of Harris Real Estate.
