Commenting on the story: Bumper salary flagged for new SA child protection boss

This is absurd. The emphasis should be on the skills and commitment of the person, not the astronomical sum being offered.
The person has a right to a decent remuneration, but more importantly, they need the skills to work in this area, which is treated like leprosy. The important thing is the resources we put into the area, the ability to treat the social workers decently and the commitment from the whole community to looking after children before they land in this heart-breaking system.
The media, too, should try to be proactive in highlighting the everyday needs of children, rather than gathering at the bottom of the cliff when the system fails. – Ron Hoenig

Commenting on the story: ‘Nod and a wink’ to bury negative robodebt report

It’s clear and obvious that a number of politicians should be facing manslaughter charges. To continue on with a scheme so obviously distorted, warped and indeed corrupt is gross negligence manifest. – Pamela Gurner-Hall

Commenting on the story: National gun register in sight after Qld police shooting

It is very simple, just combine the state registries, job done.

This will not change anything however as nearly all gun deaths since the Howard gun reforms are from illegally imported or stolen guns. Our gun laws see guns owned by very responsible persons with appropriate training. We are not America so this proposed change will likely achieve absolutely nothing.

Murders are state issues and the state police have immediate access to who owns guns already. Nationalise it of course, but don’t pretend it is a panacea to the real issue. What they don’t have is access to who has possession of the multitude of illegal guns that will continue no matter what legislative changes are made. Stop hurting the innocent responsible Australians in a ridiculous attempt to look good and achieve absolutely nothing. It’s a bit like saying let’s curfew all Australians because criminals commit most crimes at night. – Rob Naudi

Commenting on the story: ‘No one leaves home, unless home is the mouth of a shark’

Thank you for highlighting the moving speech by Fahima Ahmadi.

We are  reminded of our privilege of  living in Australia  and to remember not to take  it for granted. Let us be vocal in our support for women who have lost their right to education and equality. – Kerry Heysen
