Commenting on the story: Govt agencies to be investigated over death of six-year-old girl

I worked in SA Child Protection from 1989 to 2015 as an investigative social worker and case manager in the field, also in program and policy development, and it is heartbreaking to see things have gone from bad to worse.

It’s difficult work, problems are multifaceted, but the biggest problem is the culture. There are many dedicated and excellent social workers who know their theory and strive for excellence in practice with the only focus being on the wellbeing of the child – but there are many, many others, including at higher levels, whose social justice bent is focussed on the adults and who will not make the tough decisions early enough.

Child Protection is a messy, heartbreaking and extremely difficult business. But it is a business and needs to operate as such with strong, clear management and putting the shoulder to the grindstone in applying theoretically and legislatively based practice.

Changing culture is difficult but not impossible with the right people at the top. – Dianne Maguire

Commenting on the story: Warning COVID is more prevalent in SA than stats show

There is a contradiction between Minister Picton acknowledging the strain on our health care system and thus encouraging the use of antivirals, and the SA Health practice of severely restricting the use of antivirals to the most extreme circumstances, often to the frustration of GPs and patients alike who request them unsuccessfully.

Antivirals make good economic sense (they may be expensive, but hospitalisation is a lot more expensive) and good public health sense (they prevent a lot of misery and some of the very worst patient outcomes).

International evidence speaks to both of these points. Perhaps the SA Health “modelling” should reassess the broader use of antivirals? – Kostas Mavromaras, Professor of Economics, University of Adelaide

Commenting on the story: Countdown on for SA rocket launches

Thank you for including the information about Whalers Way being a conservation park, with several endangered species. It also correctly reports on the fire started by the unsuccessful rocket attempt.

Another site needs to be found for launching rockets. – Jo-Anne Lloyd
