Speed doesn’t kill people, accidents do. Sure, higher speeds can make them worse but the ridiculous concept that simply lowering speed limits will reduce deaths can be taken to the point at which we are literally not moving.

What will save lives are better maintained regional and rural road networks, but more importantly better trained, more attentive drivers who can drive to the conditions, not myopically focussed on their speedometers.Pete Vickery

Speed is not the cause of motor crashes.   Lack of experience, stupid mistakes and complete lack of appropriate education for drivers  –  these are the reasons people crash and die on Australian roads.

Driver education is the solution: not lowering speed limits, not increasing speed cameras. Teach people how to not just drive a car, but handle a car at speed.

There is no education in this country about what to do if a loss of traction occurs at speed. How many people know what oversteer or understeer are?  Let alone what to do in response to either.  

The physics of cornering, braking, traction, and so on to navigate a car on a motorway at speed, these are all things that a driver should have some understanding of.

Pilots are not allowed off the ground until they’ve completed a certain number of hours understanding many critical elements of their vehicle.

There needs to be a far more rigorous teaching program, and it needs to begin in schools.

There needs to be mandatory retesting for adults beginning at 50, and then every 10 years. – Nick Sharpley

If we were serious about road safety maybe have license re-testing. It is never raised as a part of a solution. Could be every 5 or 10 years. 

It could help raise money if that is the issue, but more importantly improve safety.

 If you can’t pass a re-test you shouldn’t be on the road. We can’t expect to sit an initial test when we were young and be right for life. 

Rules change, conditions change, cars change, testing changes.

Nearly every other type of license has to be renewed every few years. A drivers license should be no different. – Luke Trotter

We get pulled over by a police officer. He tells us we were speeding. We say we did not know we were exceeding the speed limit. The officer tells us that, in the interest of road safety, we should always know what the speed limit is.

This is nonsense. There are 9 different speed limits and safe driving will depend on visibility and road conditions. More importantly, safe driving depends on the driver observing what is on the road in front, not on paying attention to speed signs, speed limits and cameras etc.

I was recently criticised by my wife when driving. She said it was no wonder I get so many speeding tickets because I had just gone through an intersection with cameras and I did not check my speed.

She then informed me that she always checks her speed twice, once about 50 metres before the lights and once again as she is about to drive through the intersection.

So it seems safe drivers are the ones looking at the speedometer instead of where they are going. And we wonder why the road toll has increased. Robert Jameson
