The revamped Adelaide Oval: do we have to be negative?

KEN WOOD: The other day I was driving along listening to local radio and my attention was taken about the visit to Adelaide by AFL officals to view the reconstruction of “The Oval”. The head of the delegation could not have been more positive about the changes. In fact, he claimed it would be the best in the country. Wow what praise.

That is, until a radio caller asked who would be paying for the trip – the government or the AFL? I did not know whether to laugh or cry: in the midst of a fantastic achievement we have to be negative. Stop South Australia: we really are top of the league in kicking ourselves in the foot. Our title of being negative and inwardly focused is in need of attention. Wake up and smell the roses before it is too late.

ANDY ALCOCK: I found the article by Paul Collins, Can Christianity and population control co-exist? (InDaily, 10 October 2013) to be a very pertinent one in relation to why we need to develop a more responsible approach to environmental issues.

He made a very important comment when he stated that anthropocentrism – ie the belief that human beings constitute the entire meaning of the cosmos –  leads straight to the absurd assumption that the entire world can be turned into a feed lot for humankind with loss of all wildernesses and the extinction of tens of thousands of species.

All human beings who want to tackle global warming, widespread pollution and the death of many life forms to ensure a viable future should be concerned that many conservative people do in fact hold this view. We also need to be aware that it is not only ultra-conservative Catholic leaders and laypersons, like George Pell and Tony Abbott, who hold these views.

Such views are also strongly held by ultra-right wing, fundamentalist, protestant groups as well. In addition, many mining and industry tycoons accept these views because they don’t want to believe the message coming from the majority of climates scientists as they believe it will reduce their massive profits.

The task to change the thinking of these powerful groups seems very daunting, but it needs to be done.
