Tomorrow is World Chocolate Day, but it may as well be a year-round celebration as Adelaide’s cafés jostle for supremacy with their signature hot chocolate drinks.

Here are just a few suggestions to get you celebrating with friends:

Well known for delectable pastries that push the boundaries with unexpected ingredients and pairings, Hutt Street’s Mascavado also serves up a mean hot chocolate. They’re open from 7am, so you can get an early chocolate fix tomorrow before enjoying the rest of the suggestions.

Just Bliss Chocolates is a family run, boutique chocolatier with a café overlooking the shop floor. Wander upstairs and breathe in the wafting chocolate aromas while you wait for your fix. The Nutella hot chocolate is, dare it be said, just bliss! Find them on Gawler Place, between Rundle Mall and North Terrace.

Across the Mall in Adelaide Arcade, another proudly Australian chocolatier, Koko Black, will be serving up its signature Belgian hot chocolate. It’s chilly out, so best to go for the chilli hot chocolate to keep your core temperature up. Or opt for a hot chocolate flight, which includes three delicious morsels on the side.

Once you’ve stopped in here, you could wander over to Mirra Bar on East Terrace for a chocolate beverage, that while neither hot nor brown, certainly brings the celebration to the day. Their sakura shake blends white chocolate with raspberry gelato to produce a delicate colour reminiscent of Japan’s beloved cherry blossoms. While you’re there, enquire about their insanely indulgent high tea (Friday to Sunday, bookings required).

Many more twists on the favourite can be found at Chocolatree on O’Connell Street, North Adelaide. Their selection of hot chocolates runs the gamut from Biscoff to coconut, butterscotch to white matcha choc. Go with a big group so you can slyly sneak a sip from each person’s cup.

If you’ve followed all our suggestions, it’ll be time to take a break and virtuously shop for your five-and-two-a-day at the Central Market. But don’t get side-tracked for too long – the Belgian chocolate fountain at Providore awaits. Not strictly a beverage, but liquid and lovely nonetheless.

As evening falls on World Chocolate Day, heed the siren’s call of Shibui Dessert Bar on Grote Street. Follow it to see their pretty, Insta-worthy desserts and sup on a chocolate cake shake – vanilla ice cream blended with house-made chocolate cake (icing and all) and topped with another slice of cake.

And if you can’t get out to taste the delights, Rundle Mall has teamed up with iconic South Australian chocolatier Haigh’s Chocolates to give one lucky chocolate-lover a $200 hamper filled with Haigh’s classics, as well as two $30 Rundle Mall gift vouchers.

Enjoy!
