Regional architecture is shining bright, with accolades given to regional projects across the six categories at the 2022 South Australian Architecture Awards, announced last night.

From a total of 76 nominated projects, 35 honours were awarded in the event, which was a live-streamed presentation, with award winners in each category progressing to the National Architecture Awards.

The Education Architecture category showcased the growth of regional schools, with the Murray Bridge High School Redevelopment by COX Architecture being awarded, with jurors calling it “a beacon for the community”.

The St Francis de Sales Alive Early Learning Centre & Reception in the Adelaide Hills by Brown Falconer also received a Commendation.

Regional residential projects were also featured in the Houses (New), Multiple Housing and Sustainable Architecture categories.

In the category of Urban Design, the Gavin Walkley Award was given to the Two Wells Public Toilets & Village Green by Phillips/Pilkington Architects.

And the new Mount Gambier Regional Airport by Ashley Halliday Architects received the Jack McConnell Award for Public Architecture for its celebration of the Limestone Coast.

The new terminal references its surroundings by using exposed timber, a carefully selected colour palette, and a large central skylight, with the jurors celebrating “the adaptability of the space” which “allows the airport to be transformed”, thus making it a “benchmark for rural airports across Australia”.

The Adelaide Railway Station Entry by ARM Architecture won the prestigious City of Adelaide Prize, taking out the main prize and the People’s Choice Award.

The throughway project “reinstates a significant urban pedestrian connection back to the river” and has already become a favourite for the locals, with it also earning a Commendation in the Public Architecture category.

It honours the framework of the earlier station masterplan and successfully navigates a vast array of structural, access and services complexities and combines them with stories, materials and patterns from adjacent places and past histories.

On the other end of North Terrace, the Bice Building Refurbishment by Hassell, Purcell & Baukultur received the David Saunders Award for Heritage for creating “an exemplary landmark within Lot Fourteen”.

The Bice Building was originally designed by SA Architect George Gavin Lawson and built in 1927, with the refurbishment recovering the formal design of this old Royal Adelaide Hospital Building.

The restoration carefully removed intrusive alterations and reinstated the original balconies to reveal the finely balanced facades, while the thoughtful adaptive reuse of the internal spaces has provided functional, collaborative, flexible and creative working zones.

Parkside Residence by Ashley Halliday Architects was awarded the John S Chappel Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New) because it “takes cues from the adjacent 1880s Villas”, with an efficient floorplan that makes the most out of the compact site.

Jurors recognised that “the dramatic steel gable window is evidence of the collaborative design process between architect and fabricator” to create “a delicately balanced bookend to a harmonious composition”.

While the John Schenk Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) went to Medindie House by Architects Ink for their “bold and expansive use of concrete” in their two-storey addition to a “grand old sandstone villa”. The concrete addition “never feels heavy” as daylight filters through the northern window walls.

The SA Emerging Architect Prize, celebrating an architect or architectural collaboration at the start of their career; the SA President’s medal, for significant contributions to the profession; and the SA Architecture Medal, the highest honour awarded by the SA Chapter, will be awarded at the in-person celebrations at the Adelaide Intercontinental this Saturday, 18 June.
